Welcome to Hull YPI Lawn Tennis Club

Introduction

Hello,

Unfortunately Hull YPI Tennis Club is no longer in operation.

The decision has been hard due to make due to the clubs long history.  However due to the health and safety of the tennis Courts, the neglect of the maintenance of the courts by the landlords, the courts are now in an unplayable condition.

The tennis committee takes the duty of care of their members and players seriously, and so it is no longer safe nor fair to continue our journey at Hull YPI.

The Hull YPI was formed in 1860 with the generosity of Thomas Ferens MP, Politician  and philanthropist.

The  Lawn Tennis Club was formed in 1906, it was set up as a charity and was run by Trustees.

The Hull YPI LTC along with other sports moved to its location on Chanterlands Avenue in 1968, and the centre was opened by Sir Leo Shultz.

At this time there were 20 grass courts, 4 shale courts, 3 macadam. As well as tennis courts, there was also 3 bowling green, Cricket, Badminton courts, Squash courts, football, hockey pitches, indoor sports hall.

Over the years the Tennis Club hosted an array of events such as the Hull and District League Tournament (1980's) the  Hull Tennis Tournament and Yorkshire Championships for many years, both sponsored by Arco.

Many Yorkshire juniors and internationals played at the  site including Yannick Noah (captain of the French Davis Cup), Barry Cowan former GB player, Katie O'Brien former British number 1, Kyle Edmund, Paul Jubb to name but a few.

There were many successful Tennis coaches which also  led to producing a host of  successful juniors. In the 80's and 90's the club and coaching team had a reputation for being a hub for producing some of the best juniors in the whole of Yorkshire.

Since the 1960's to the present day the Tennis club has also won numerous senior events  in the Ladies, Men's and mixed doubles in the Hull and District Tennis League.

Since 2014 the whole sports and business site was purchased and is run and operated by LTS Leisure Ltd (company number 09020434), who became the new landlords of the Hull YPI Tennis Club, and the others sports clubs on the site.

The Tennis club has been run by a committe of volunteers and we would like to Thank them all - past and present - for their years of decication,  commitement, contribution and enthusiasm for keeping as many people playing tennis in the Hull area, as well as trying to keep the club alive in later years.

Additionally we would like to thank all those Tennis Coaches that have had connections with the club over the years, any past and present members, all those pay and play players and guests. Without any of you the club would not have existed for as long as it has.

We encourage all of you to continue to play tennis,  the nearest Tennis club is at Cottingham whish is only 2 miles away, please see their website for more information.

Once again we are extremely devasted that the club has had to dissolve, and although it may be the end of Hull YPI Tennis club, we will continue with this wonderful game that  we all love and which has brough us together.
