Centenary Celebrations for Blofield and South Creake Tennis Clubs

In 2024 two Norfolk clubs enjoyed 100 years centenary celebrations:

BLOFIELD TENNIS CLUB

In August the club hit another milestone in it's Centenary Year. With a new family application completed the club now have 101 adult and 79 junior members. This is more than double the membership of 2020, reflecting the real progress since improving the facilities and inclusive programme at the Club.

Blofield Celebrate Centenary

SOUTH CREAKE LAWN TENNIS CLUB

To mark 100 years of tennis on the grass courts at South Creake, the club organised a costume exhibition tournament on Saturday 17th August.

A high standard of period attire was matched by enthusiastic play. Unfortunately, there was an incident in the second semi-final leading to a heated dispute with the guest umpire, Colonel Kitbag of the Tandoori Rifles. This resulted in all four players being shown the red card and sent off court. Happily, five of the local village urchins, who had been pressganged as ball boys and girls, took up the wooden rackets and white balls and entertained the spectators while the grown-ups cooled off. Eventually peace was restored and the final was played, resulting in a narrow victory for Sebastian and Fran Brunt.

The tournament was a centrepiece of South Creake’s fete to celebrate the Centenary of tennis and bowls on grass in the village. The bowls club also presented a vintage exhibition match using wooden bowls. After the tournaments, visitors were encouraged to have a go at both sports with fun games laid on, and more traditional sports such as Wellie Wanging and Apple Bobbing were also on offer elsewhere on the playing field.
