Norfolk Tennis Community Loses Two Great Servants

The Norfolk tennis community has lost two great servants with the passing of Jane Harris (on 18 June) and Martin Braybrook (on 25 June).

Jean, who died peacefully in Bristol, was Chair of the Norfolk branch of the British Tennis Coaches’ Association from 1980 to 2001. She was made an Honorary National Members upon her retirement in 2001.

Jean was a formidable and passionate tennis coach, and tournament organiser for many years, including the Junior Parks for five years. She was editor of Norfolk Tennis News, in its hard copy format, and a Norfolk Tennis Council member for many years.

Her husband, Jolyon, a former Norfolk County player, was the Secretary of the County Tennis Association (1970-80 and 2001-05), President (1984-85), and served on the LTA Council for 18 years until 1989. Jolyon died in 2015.

Jean’s funeral will take place at St Mary's Church, Swardeston on 1 September.

Martin was the long-time Treasurer of Cromer Lawn Tennis & Racket Sports Club, and also a former Chair. He passed away at home, with his family.

Martin was a squash volunteer for more than 40 years and received the Unsung Hero at the England Squash Awards 2024 for his extensive involvement at Cromer. He was also a recipient of the Norfolk Tennis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.

Norfolk Tennis wishes to express its condolences to Jean’s children, Clare, Ben and Nick, and, also, to Martin’s family, Gwen, Suzanne and Alison.
