Introduction

Oaklands is an established and popular park, which covers approximately 5 hectares (12 acres) of grounds within the historic quarter of the City of Chelmsford. It was first opened as a public park in 1930 and today boasts both Green Flag and Green Heritage status.

The park is home to Chelmsford Museum, the Essex Regiment Museum and The Hive Cafe, the cafe offering hot and cold food, drinks, cakes and snacks.  The museum is free with lots of free and paid activities throughout the holidays.

There are five newly refurbished tennis courts located at Oaklands Park split between two blocks.

  • Courts 1-3 are located in a beautiful secluded walled area. The courts are full size with one of the courts overmarked with mini tennis court.
  • Courts 4 & 5 are located next to the museum and cafe.

Free parking is available on site for 2 hours, with other local parking options available for longer periods that are on our website  https://www.chelmsford.gov.uk/museums/visit/chelmsford-museum/

There are public toilets available during opening hours.

In addtion to the tennis courts there is a large open grass area for sports and picnicking, play areas, the award-winning Echo Garden, and traditional ornamental gardens.
