The summer doubles league matches are now completed and the mens 2nd and ladies 2nd team both earned promotion.
The ladies 2nd team played their final fixrure at home knowing that a draw would be enough to enable them to win the division. Their opponents, Market Drayton, were lying in second place, just one point behind. At the last minute one of the Market Drayton players had to withdraw and a replacement player found, but it was explained to the Oswestry captain, Di Dorrell, that the replacement player was in fact ineligible to play having played for higher placed teams, but she was playing so that the 4 rubbers could be played. This meant that, by default, Oswestry would take the 2 points from her 2 rubbers. So the presuure was off the Oswestry team as with these 2 points their success was in the bag. However the first pair of Jo Dalietos and Ruth Sperring showed their opponents no mercy winning in straight sets 6-3 6-0, earning the team an additional point. The other scoring rubber, played by Carol Slater and Bronwen Jenks was a tight contest, with Carol and Bronwen winning the first set, but losing the second. A 10 point tie break was needed to decide the rubber, Oswestry had match point at 9-8 but could not convert and Market Drayton won 10-8. So the result was a 3-1 win for Oswestry ladies.
A magnificent season for the 2nd team ladies and tribute must be paid to Jo and Ruth who have had a superb season winning all of their rubbers, the only players in the division to achieve this. Carol must also have a mention as she came close to achieving the same, losing just one rubber (the last of the season).
WELL DONE LADIES.
