Oswestry Tennis Clubs Centenary year’s Club Final’s Day was held on 21st September in glorious sunshine.
The Day started with the September Social tournament. Eight participants battled it out for two hours before Gavin Porritt playing with Christine Whittingham beat Tanith Day, who was playing with Shirley Hughes, in the grand final.
A lunch was then enjoyed whilst the first of the Club Championship Finals, the Single’s Final was being competed between Matt Grice and Gary Edwards. Matt made a flying start, easily winning the first set but the second set was more closely contested with Matt finally closing it out 6-4 to win the title.
The Men’s Doubles and Ladies Doubles finals were next up, being played simultaneously on the clubs courts.
The Men’s Doubles final was played between Matt Grice, partnering Adam Hughes and Steve Winter, playing with Alan Clark. This match followed a similar pattern to the Grice/Edwards Single’s March with the fist set being convincingly won by Matt & Adam before a more competitive second set was played out before Matt & Adam took the victory and with it the trophy.
The Ladies Doubles final was a thrilling affair with Liz Newsholme playing with Maisie Anderson against Sian Spencer playing with Jo Dalietos. Some lovely tennis was played all round but Liz and Maisie showed their extra resolve to come out as the winners.
The day was completed with the Mixed Doubles Final which was contested between Steve Winter playing with Maisie Anderson and Gary Edwards, playing with Jo Dalietos. A closely fought encounter was won by Steve and Maisie, with Maisie picking up her second trophy of the day.
The club now looks forward to its Club Centenary Dinner and Presentation Evening to be held at the Oswestry Cricket Club on Friday 26th September.
