Welcome to our 19th season. As I write this over the Easter holiday it’s difficult to imagine those balmy summer days playing tennis - we do have them occasionally!
Start of the Season
The new season officially starts at the beginning of May so to mark this we will be holding a “Fun Family Event” on Monday 7th May from 2.00. Refreshments will be available. Even if you don’t plan to play please come anyway. A warm invitation is also extended to our ‘friends’ who may have given up playing tennis some years ago but who can still enjoy the comradeship of the club.
We will also be doing the Wimbledon draw at this event.
Saturday Afternoon Club Play
Saturday afternoon club play continues throughout the year between 4pm and 6pm. This is a session for friendly doubles tennis whatever your standard. It’s also a great opportunity for those new to the club to meet other members.
Mid Week Daytime Social Play
We tried to get this up and running last year but struggled to get enough interested players. It would be great to get a small group of players who would like to play regularly - especially if you are also having coaching as this gives you a chance to practise those strokes. It could be singles or doubles depending on numbers and what people would like to do. Please let us know if you would be interested in this, especially if you would also like to organise it!
Annual Club Closed Tournament
We will again be having a men’s and women’s singles box league running through the summer. We have had this format over the last couple of years and it does seem to encourage more of you to enter. You will receive information about this in the next few weeks.
The finals for this will be held on Sunday 23rd September.
Mixed American Tournament - Pimms And Strawberries - Sunday 8th July 2.00
For those of you who enjoy a game of mixed doubles we are holding this tournament on the middle Sunday of Wimbledon when everyone should be keen to get a little bit competitive!
League Matches
The club continues to have Ladies’, Men’s and Mixed Doubles teams in the Bedfordshire Tennis Leagues. We would really welcome a few new faces in the teams so if you would like to be a regular or just play in the occasional match please let us know.
Bedfordshire LTA also run a league for veterans (men over 50, ladies over 45), with matches played on Tuesday mornings during the summer months. Pavenham will again be joining forces with some other local clubs and will be competing under the name “Ouse Valley”.
Dates of home League matches are given at the end of this News Release. These are times when the courts are reserved for team play.
Singles leagues
There are now local tennis singles leagues covering both Bedford and Milton Keynes areas. If singles is your thing, have a look at localtennisleagues.com. For matches in any organised singles league we waive the usual visitors’ fees for your home fixtures. If you would like to ensure a court will be free for your home fixtures, please contact Martin on 824083 or make a booking on the calendar, using either the club website or our Facebook page.
Visitors
We are happy for members to bring visitors to play with but, in fairness to all, a visitor’s fee of £2.50 per adult, £1.00 per student and 50p per junior is payable. It is the accompanying member’s responsibility to see that the fee is collected and paid to the treasurer (5 Brookfields, Pavenham) and that the visitor’s book inside the clubhouse is signed. This is so the visitor will be covered by our insurance. After a maximum of 3 visits in any one season, membership is encouraged.
Floodlights
Tokens for the lights are available from Martin Telfer, 5 Brookfields, at a cost of £4.00 an hour for both courts. The token meter is on the left hand side of the door as you enter.
Coaching
Please note that although payments for coaching are made out to Dave Revell, rather than to the Club, Membership cheques should still be made out to Pavenham Tennis Club. Only paid up members are eligible to participate in the club coaching sessions so please ensure membership is renewed for the new season (1st May 2018).
There are currently five junior coaching sessions each week. All the juniors are doing well and are enthusiastic about their tennis. Next term will run from Saturday 14th April to Saturday 14th July.
The adult coaching continues on Monday evenings so if you are interested in brushing up your skills to get ready for the summer season, please contact Dave.
There is a Ladies group on Tuesday mornings which is lively and well attended and for the active retired or semi-retired coaching takes place on Thursday mornings from 10.30-11.30.

Wimbledon Tickets Draw
We encourage all members to sign up to British Tennis and also to opt in to the Wimbledon ballot every year. This won’t mean you end up with tickets you don’t want, but it will improve the chances for those members who would like to get tickets.
British Tennis membership is free to all our club members and Friends. To sign up either telephone 0845 873 7202 or log on to www.lta.org.uk/member. Remember to list Pavenham Tennis Club as your club.
If you did opt in to the ballot this year you will receive a form by email giving you details of our ticket allocation and asking you if you are interested in entering our club ballot for tickets and for your preferences. In this way we are usually able to allocate tickets so that those who are successful in the ballot end up with tickets that they like.
Remember that you must have paid your PTC 2018/19 membership fees before the ballot date. Please mark your preferences and return the forms by 5th May at the latest. We will be drawing the ballot during the Season Opening Event on Monday 7th May.
Sweatshirts
Club sweatshirts are available in white or royal blue and can have individual names embroidered on them. If you or your children would like to order one, please find order forms in the clubhouse or contact Martin Telfer (telephone 824083 or email to tennis@telfer.demon.co.uk).
The Summer Ball
We have decided to give the Ball a miss this year so that the organisers can have a well earned rest.
Dogs on the playing field
Any dogs on the playing field MUST be on a lead. Please also ensure your dog is tethered whilst you are playing tennis.
The Tennis Club online
We have a website which can be found at
www.clubspark.lta.org.uk/PavenhamTennisClub
This is still being developed but we will try to keep it updated with any information you may need about the club.
Please add it to your favourites along with our facebook page at www.facebook.com/PavenhamTC. You don’t have to be a Facebook user to see this page.
If you are interested in seeing how our teams are faring in the leagues, look us up at lta.tournamentsoftware.com and search for ‘Teams’ (not ‘Clubs’) containing the word Pavenham.
