COURTS OPENING SATURDAY 16th MAY
We had hoped to open the courts earlier but the inclement weather has delayed this slightly. There looks like quite a bit of rain around for the remainder of the week but slightly drier and warmer from the weekend. We could keep waiting but we've decided to open the courts from SATURDAY 16th MAY in the hope that the grass will be dry enough for play to get underway.
If the courts are wet we would ask you to refrain from playing as it would be a great shame to damage the surface before the season has even started!
2026 HEADLINE SPONSORS
We are delighted that Hayes + Storr and Norfolk Hideaways have agreed to sponsor the Club for 2026. Their support enables us to maintain the grass courts to a very high standard and we are hugely grateful to them both.
JOE'S LAWN CARE
The courts have been treated through the Winter and Spring by Joe's Lawn Care who have generously donated their help for a full year to enable us to benefit from their expertise in managing grass tennis courts. This is very much appreciated by the club and we thank them for their generosity.
COURT UPDATE
We have taken advantage of the fine weather to lay down clay loam on the courts (this fills in bumps and helps to create a flat surface) and we have overseeded them. We have also rolled and prepared them for white lining by marking out court positions and lines (quite tricky - should have paid more attention to the triganometry lesson at school all those years ago).
Next week will be time to cut the grass short and decide on an opening date. We will keep you all posted!
COACHING
We are delighted to let you know that we have already signed up TOM MANNING as coach once again. He is an LTA Level 2 coach who ran sessions last season at South Creake for both children and adults. These were hugely popular and we are thrilled he is available for this season. The sessions look like they will be held on SUNDAY MORNINGS - we hope this will work well.
The committee have agreed and released new membership fees; an event calendar will follow as will details of all social and club night dates. A newsletter will be sent shortly. If you have any suggestions or questions please do get in touch committee@southcreaketennis.net
A family-friendly grass court club in the beautiful village of South Creake
South Creake Tennis Club was founded in 1924 and is one of the very few grass-only clubs in the country. It is run entirely by volunteers and has a membership of over 200.
The club's two courts are on the village playing field, near to the Memorial Pavilion where parking is available.
The courts are available for use by anyone in the community and visitors are welcome.
The playing season usually runs from May to September, weather permitting. Memberships and casual court hire are available, with everything handled online.
The club offers a summer programme of coaching for children and adults with LTA accredited coaches.
We would like to thank our commercial sponsors for their support:
We also gratefully acknowledge funding from South Creake Charities, Jack's Lane Windfarm Community Fund and the Norfolk Community Foundation.
You can support us when you shop online through Easyfundraising. It's simple and fun. We are also grateful for donations which can be made securely on the Support page.
Please park in the Memorial Pavilion car park and not on the grass verges around the courts.
"Absolutely idyllic courts in the middle of a quintessentially British village. Myself and three friends who have played tennis since we were young (now mid-twenties) visited on a trip to Norfolk to play a few different grass courts, and we were blown away by the quality of these courts. They are flat, well kept and have a consistent bounce. There's bunting around the fences which presents them beautifully, with the brook and the surrounding houses providing a lovely backdrop to the courts. Huge hats off to those who maintain the courts, and thank you for opening them up to non-members. I'd recommend any visitors to show the respect for this tennis oasis that it deserves!"
Thank you BEN JOHNSON. It is truely heartwarming to get such great feedback. Bual53
To mark 100 years of tennis at South Creake on the grass, the Club organised a costume exhibition tournament during the village sports centenary celebrations on Saturday 17th August.
A high standard of period attire was matched by enthusiastic play. Unfortunately, there was an incident in the second semi-final leading to a heated dispute with the umpire, Colonel Kitbag of the Tandoori Rifles. This resulted in all four players being shown the colonial equivalent of the red card and sent off court. Happily five of the local village urchins, who had been pressganged as ballboys and girls, took up the wooden rackets and entertained the crowd while the adults cooled off. Eventually peace was restored and the final was played, resulting in victory for Sebastian and Fran Brunt.
