We were only sixteen …
…but for three hours on the morning of Sunday, 15th December we were the Kings and Queens of STC tennis, the most important people on the planet.
And why?
Well, it’s not every day that you receive a personal invitation from STC’s tennis co-ordinator
to take part in the final Social Tournament of the 2024 season!
Our picture below says it all.
And we did our very best to live up to the high standards expected of us.
Brother Nigel (Kirkby) took it upon himself to achieve the highest score with 20 games; and sister Sam (Morris) rose with a flourish to the occasion with 19.
Significantly, there were 4 men players close behind with 17 games and the same number of women players, also with 17 games to their credit.
Here we are again at the end of the tournament “still standing better than I ever did”
in the immortal words of Elton John.
Ann au milieu, un Nigel souriant à droite et Pam un peu coy à gauche.
And continuing with our inspiring musical references…
“You’ll never walk alone” may be the ubiquitous chant of football crowds the world over, but its words resonate with STC players too. While we played on the Astroturf, the backup mix-in team were in action over on the hard courts, ready to substitute for any player, if so needed (which in the event they weren’t).
With a total of 28 players on court it was an excellent turnout for a mid-December morning.
Our thanks, of course, to Ann for providing yet again a high-class organisational infrastructure.
