Swansea Tennis and Squash Club Club Champs 2025
Club Championships Report 2025 – Where Do We Start?
In mid-June, entries opened for what became our largest Club Championships ever, an incredible 26 events (or 37, including the back draws!).
And wow, did our members respond. We had over 300 entries in the adult events alone, making this year’s competition the biggest in our club’s history. The enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and community spirit shown by everyone were simply outstanding, proof that our tennis section is absolutely thriving. Long may it continue!
This year, we expanded the line-up to make the Championships even more inclusive. We introduced Men’s and Ladies’ 50+ Singles events, added a Social American Doubles event, and created two tiers of the Parent & Child Cup due to its growing popularity.
Once again, the Men’s Singles was huge, with over 40 players taking part! The Parent & Child (Teen) event was another highlight, with 26 players enjoying great matches and even greater fun.
But without doubt, the standout events of the summer were the two American Doubles tournaments that kicked off the Championships in July. We had 15 players in the Social event and 26 in the Team Player event, both fantastic events full of laughter, camaraderie, and great tennis, with players mixing across groups and forming new friendships on court.
To top it all off, our very own Wimbledon superstar Mimi Xu presented medals and prizes. Mimi also announced that the club had been successful in its Sport Wales grant application, meaning courts 7, 8, and 9 are officially on their way!
The standard across the board was incredible. The Ladies’ Doubles featured some of the best pairs in Wales, while the Mixed Doubles draw was both huge (28 pairs!) and packed with quality.
A huge thank you to every single member who took part. Whether you entered to win or just to support the event, we truly appreciate your involvement and hope you enjoyed the experience.
We know scheduling matches, especially in doubles can be tricky, so thank you all for your efforts in keeping things moving. (Although… I am keeping a little black book for those who missed their deadlines....your cards are marked for next year! 😉)
Our youngest competitor, Guto Williams (aged 5), brought boundless energy and smiles to the courts, while our oldest participant, Norman Allnatt (82 years young), reminded us all that tennis really is a lifelong sport.
After two months and hundreds of friendly yet fiercely contested matches, we were left with 70 finalists, representing every corner of the club: juniors, seniors, first-team regulars, and social players alike. We were all set for what promised to be the greatest Finals Day on record…
…but the Welsh weather had other ideas! (More on that below...)
📊 2025 Club Championships by the Numbers
- 🎾 360 total entries
- 🏆 35 Club Champions crowned
- ⏱️ 8 weeks of competitive tennis
- 💪 Over 500 matches completed
- 👥 70 finalists
- 🏅 112 trophies awarded
☔ Finals Day – Saturday 20th September 2025
After months of glorious sunshine, the Welsh weather decided not to play ball. Of course it did, it wouldn’t be Finals Day without a bit of drama!
We had 37 finals scheduled across six courts, already a logistical challenge, even without rain. But this wasn’t just a drizzle… it was torrential from the early hours, with forecasts predicting no play at all.
By late morning, it was clear we had to rethink. We opted for a 3:00 PM start, prioritising the main draw finals. Then, as if by magic, the skies cleared and we were finally underway!
Courts 1, 2, and 3 came alive with top-quality tennis as Finals Day got off to a thrilling start. Sadly, the astro turf courts never fully recovered, and we had to make the difficult call to cancel all matches scheduled there.
A special apology to all the junior and senior finalists affected, it’s never easy to lose your big moment, but your patience and positivity were outstanding.
Still, we can’t complain too much we’ve had three years of sunshine in a row! This year, the rain finally caught up with us, but as always, our members’ flexibility and good humour shone through.
🎾 Now to the Tennis…
And what a show it was! The balcony was packed for much of the afternoon, the atmosphere electric, and the standard of tennis phenomenal.
The Singles Main Events produced two brand-new champions:
- Ladies’ Singles – Ffion, who was in outstanding form, playing with real confidence and style to lift her first title.
- Men’s Singles – Jacob Pearson, who delivered a rock-solid performance to finally get his name on the John Gregory Trophy — a fantastic achievement and a sign of more to come!
In the 8 & Under final, we had a repeat of the Welsh Championship showdown — Zander vs Charles. Two of the best 8-year-olds in the country putting on a masterclass right here at the club!
The 9 & Under final was just as thrilling — Theo and Charles showing incredible movement, skill, and composure. Three future stars for sure!
In the Mixed Doubles, fan favourite Nick Rees teamed up with Bec Cobley to take on Nia and Jacob. It was an absolute thriller, high-quality rallies, huge winners, and plenty of balcony gasps! In the end, Nick found another gear in the championship tie-break to clinch victory for his team and send the crowd wild.

👏 Notable Mentions
A huge shoutout to everyone who reached multiple finals this year, too many to list, which says everything about the depth and talent at the club right now.
Special recognition goes to:
- Peter North – Three finals, two titles, and one still to play. A brilliant year for one of our most consistent performers.
- Evan Williams – Another triple-finalist who’s shown real maturity and composure this season.
- Ben Nash – The doubles machine! Three consecutive Men’s Doubles titles and still unbeaten. Incredible consistency.
- Kylie, Bec, Kim, Alex, Jacob, Mark, Cam, and James W – All thoroughly deserved their finals spots after huge improvements this year and becoming key team players.
- Corrinne & Tesni – The mother–daughter duo who stole hearts (and the title!) in the Ladies’ 110 Doubles against Michelle and Jenny.
- And finally, this year truly belonged to the girls, from juniors like Mahum, Grace, Imogen, and Sara shining in their age groups, to Ffion, Nia, Lily, and Elin dominating senior events. The future of our women’s tennis looks very bright indeed!
🙌 Finals Day Thank You
None of this would be possible without a huge team effort.

Trophies
Thanks to Wendy and El Lightbody for the last-minute engraving missions, your attention to detail ensures every champion gets their special moment.
Evening Entertainment
Huge thanks to Mike Woozley for organising the DJ, ice cream van, and much of the evening fun one of our best nights yet! And to Wendy, who once again led the raffle, raising over £400... fantastic!
Max delivered another top-notch performance as Club Compère (think Michael Barrymore in his prime — pre-scandal!) and El wrapped up the evening perfectly with a brilliant season summary and awards presentation.
Finally, a big thanks to Gareth Hurlow, my right-hand man throughout the day, your behind-the-scenes help was invaluable.
The Bar Team
To Holly and Ella, who worked tirelessly all day, you kept everyone refreshed and smiling right through to the night. Brilliant job!
💰 A Profitable Success
Now in its fourth year, the Championships are fully self-sufficient. Once all costs are settled, we expect around £500 profit, and the bar also took over £1,200 on the day, a great return considering the weather cut things short. A brilliant result both on and off the court!
🏆 End of Year Tennis Awards 2025
Our annual Tennis Team Celebration & Awards was held on Finals Day, in front of a packed clubhouse buzzing with energy, the perfect setting to celebrate an extraordinary season.
We’ve enjoyed one of the most successful years in our history, with teams across all levels producing brilliant tennis.
🥇 Team Success
This summer was full of silverware and promotions:

- Men’s 4th Team – Division Champions
- Men’s NCL Team – Champions
