Adult Skill Levels
Beginners
This level is ideal for adults who are new to tennis or returning after a long break or have had a few hits with friends on the court. Beginner players are focused on building their fundamental skills, such as learning proper grip, basic footwork, and the mechanics of their strokes. At this stage, players are still working on consistently getting the ball into play, aiming for controlled and accurate shots.
Improvers
Improver-level players should be able to sustain consistent rallies with both forehand and backhand strokes. It’s not necessary to generate significant spin or speed at this stage, as this is where players start learning to incorporate spin into their game. The key focus is consistency, particularly from the baseline, where players should aim to hit more than 10 consecutive shots at a comfortable speed. For serves, the priority is getting the ball over the net consistently rather than focusing on power.
Intermediates
Players are expected to already have a solid foundation in the game and are comfortable in a matchplay environment.
Players are expected to be able to hit consistent groundstrokes (forehand, backhand) and volley, and can execute them with reasonable accuracy and control and can reliably maintain rallies of moderate length with opponents of similar skill.
There are still areas for improvement, such as enhancing the variety and spin on your shots and increasing the consistency of your serves.
Advanced
At this level, players are refining their technique and focusing heavily on tactics, with the goal of transitioning to a more competitive mode of play. Players should be able to strike a good balance between spin and speed in all their shots, including net play. They should also have a solid understanding of how to construct and win points.
