Play Tennis

At Wakefield Tennis Club there are opportunities for everyone to play tennis at a variety of levels.

Juniors & Beginners

If you're a junior or a complete beginner, we have coaching via Wakefield School of Tennis who can help you learn the basics of the game.

Adult Social Tennis

Members may use the courts any time after 5:30 p.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday. The courts are for school use at other times.

Social tennis is free of charge for your first month's trial.

Tennis balls are provided throughout the season.

Summer Tennis Tournaments

We run a number of tournaments during the summer months (both open and handicapped) in a variety of formats (mixed doubles, men's/ladies' doubles and men's/ladies' singles).

Winter Social Tennis

During the winter months, once the clocks have changed, we continue to play outdoors (weather permitting), but only on Saturday afternoons, as it is too dark for the evening sessions (members may also play on Sunday mornings/afternoons).

During the winter we arrange play indoors at the John Charles Tennis Centre in South Leeds on Saturday afternoons to guarantee a game whatever the weather. If you would like to join this group, please let David Burton know, as the courts have to be booked in advance.

So, unless it's prolonged heavy rain or sub-zero temperatures, there will probably be the more hardy members playing at the club - feel free to join them.

League Tennis

Wakefiled Tennis Club has seven competitve teams that play match tennis in our area. We have two teams in each of the following leagues: Wakefield & District mixed, Barkston Ash mixed, Leeds Tennis League (Men's). We also have a mixed team in the Leeds Winter Indoor League.

Arrange your own play

If you want to play with other members you can do so during the times that the club is open. You can arrange your own singles or doubles play.

Tennis Rules

Tennis rules can be found here It's worth having a read through them as there are some surprising rules that you might not know. League matches are played by these rules, with some exceptions e.g. Barkston Ash plays rubbers of 12 games rather than sets. Social tennis set length will be altered at busy times. Once you're a regular you'll get to know how things work!
