Walking Tennis is a version of the game that began in Bristol in 2018 but is now under the umbrella of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). It is a slower version of the game; it is tennis at a walking pace with no running or jumping. It has been designed so that almost anyone can play regardless of age or fitness. Whitstable Tennis Club strongly supports the Walking Tennis initiative and hold weekly Thursday and Friday morning sessions from 10.00am to 11.30am which is open to anyone who would like to play. Currently, there are around 10-12 regular players enjoying each session. It offers those of a lower or restricted physical ability the chance to play.
The game uses low pressurised, orange tennis balls played on a full-size tennis court with two bounces permitted (but with both bounces having to land within the designated singles or doubles court.)
At its heart, Walking Tennis offers a simple entry point for people to become more physically active, which is widely recognised as an effective way of managing a wide variety of health conditions.
Walking Tennis in Whitstable was born in June 2021 and players have seen improvements in their strength, balance, coordination, power, agility, mobility and stamina. Additionally, it reaches out to not only the physical needs but also to psychological wellbeing and provides a very welcome sense of belonging, camaraderie and laughter.
Please do come along to the St Anne’s Road Courts any Thursday or Friday morning between 10.00-11.30 and enjoy a tennis mixture of exercise and fun.
