“We are thrilled to welcome people to our fully refurbished centre, and proud to bring padel to North Wales for the very first time. Our brand-new facilities will provide the people of Wrexham with a world-class centre at the heart of their community, capable of hosting international competitions in both tennis and padel. We can’t wait for everyone to visit & see all the hard work that has been done over the last 9 months.”
What is Padel?
Padel is an exciting racket sport that blends elements of tennis and squash. Played as doubles on an enclosed court with glass and mesh walls, the game allows for creative, dynamic play, with the walls integral to the action.
Originating in Mexico in the 1960s, padel has become a global sensation, particularly in Spain, Latin America, and Europe. Matches follow tennis-style scoring, with players serving underhand and walls adding a unique twist to gameplay.
The sport is loved by celebrities, including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Novak Djokovic, David Beckham, and Brad Pitt, further boosting its popularity.
What Else is New at Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre?
The refurbishment didn’t just result in the padel courts, upgrades were seen across a few other areas of centre:
- A modernised reception area designed to create a fresh and welcoming atmosphere for visitors entering the centre.
- Refurbished changing rooms – a modern space where players of both tennis and padel can change, shower, and freshen up.
- Café – a contemporary café that serves as a pre- or post-game refreshment spot and offers excellent viewing locations for those watching the action on the indoor tennis or padel courts.
- Nine resurfaced outdoor tennis courts – these courts will provide more opportunities for players to enjoy them during the summer months and enable the centre to host national and international-level competitions.
- Enhanced floodlighting – four outdoor courts now feature energy-efficient LED lighting, allowing evening play during darker months.
- A newly revamped public space, or multi-functional space available for hire.
These developments aim to elevate the experience for current users, attract new players, and strengthen community engagement by promoting an active and healthy lifestyle.
