Burnley Tennis Ladies Crowned National League Winners
Burnley Tennis Club Ladies have continued their great form clinching the Aegon Division 1 National League title
Last year Burnley Ladies won the East Lancs Division 1 and 2 league titles followed by winning the East Lancs cup and the Ralph Bint County Cup, missing out by 1 point on winning the National Club League title to eventual League Winners Manchester, but this year Burnley have been in fine form winning every game to secure the title
The format of the competition is 4 singles matches and 2 doubles matches and the formidable Burnley Team showed their strength winning every game this season. Burnley Ladies A team have already set the pace in the East Lancs league notching up their 5th consecutive win in the league opening up a huge 11 point lead with a game in hand on second place Whalley and yet to drop a single set. Burnley Men made it through to the quarter finals of the Roscoe County Cup with a hard fought 5-4 win against Bellingham Tennis Club, both club fielded strong teams featuring county players in what was always going to be a fantastic match, Burnley lead 2-1 after round one with Bellingham winning 2 of the next 3 games to make the score 3-3 going into the final round, Bellingham went 4-3 ahead with Burnley winning the next match to make it 4-4 with one match remaining and it was 2 of Burnley youngsters who showed all their fighting qualities winning in straight sets to set up a quarter final match at home to Manchester Northern. Burnley Juniors under 9s have taking the runner up spot in their first season and promotion to division 2 of the Aegon National Club league after they narrowly missed the title to Broughton Tennis Club, Burnley under 9s playing for the first time in the league lost only one match all year to eventual league winners Broughton, wins against Robin Park, Holcombe Brook and a draw with Heaton Mersey made sure they gave themselves a good chance of finishing on the top but a Broughton win on the last day meant Burnley had to settle for second place. This is a fantastic achievement and shows what fantastic junior tennis players Burnley have got, well done to all the players who have played their part in the team this year. Burnley under 12s played host to Blundellsands Tennis Club from Liverpool on Saturday, yet again another fantastic display from the Burnley team pushed Blundellsands until the end losing out 4-2 Blundellsands from Liverpool have thrashed everyone to date and a win against Burnley would secure the league title for them, Burnley didn’t let them have it all their own way when Burnley won both the number 1 and 3 singles games, Blundellsands squared things up winning both number 2 and 4 singles in highly entertaining matches, Blundellsands won the first doubles match with Burnley losing the second doubles in a championship tiebreak, yet again the under 12s have been fantastic all year and played their part in some very close competitive games. Burnley under 16s
Burnley under 16s fielding two team this year have had a strong start to the season, both currently sit in second place of division 1 and division 2, the under 16s A beat Whalley A 7-0 and the Under 16s B beat Towneley A 6-1 in their last league games. Teams Matthew Barlow, Joe Barlow, Iqraa Khalid, Alex Dodgson, James Ashworth, Edward Burrow, Ethan Little, Matthew Ingham, Cameron Loads, Ethan Bulcock, Joseph Bristoe have all played their part. This week’s fixtures U16s A play host to Clitheroe A and Under 16s B travel to Feniscowles A
Tennis in Burnley is in a fantastic place and long may it continue, the club runs a ladies coaching group every Thursday from 6.30-7.30, this session is designed to help ladies return to tennis or start playing tennis, no matter what your level or ability it is the perfect session to get started again or play a little bit more, the club runs sessions for children aged 5-16 years throughout the week with lots of other coaching opportunities for young adults over 16s Adults and Children, if coaching is not for you then why don’t you come and get involved in the clubs social tennis activities every Tuesday and Thursday evening and Thursday and Saturday afternoon or if you love that competitive edge and enjoy playing team sport we have lots of men’s, ladies, mixed and junior teams for you to have a go in, we currently have teams for all levels and abilities
