Burnley win opening round of the Roscoe County Cup

Burnley sailed through the opening round of the Roscoe County Cup when they played Norbreck Tennis Club from Bispham in Blackpool

The Roscoe Cup is a team competition for Tennis clubs across Lancashire with a best of 9 doubles matches, both clubs select 3 pairs to all play each other

Burnley first pair of Mark Rushton Woods and Chris Rowell thrashed the Norbreck third pair 6-0 6-0 to put Burnley quickly 1-0 up, Lee Stretton and Mick Harris soon made it 2-0 when they beat Norbreck first pair 6-2 6-1 with Jez Palmer and Scott Northey beating the Norbreck second pair 6-0 7-5 to complete the first round of matches

Burnley leading the first round of games by a score of 3-0 they then had to play off against the respective pairs in the second round, Rushton Woods and Rowell showed their class beating the Norbreck first pair 6-1 6-1 with Stretton and Harris coming through a tight affair with the Norbreck second pair to win in 3 sets 7-5 1-6 10-7, Palmer and Northey completed round 2 and guaranteed the win for Burnley when they beat the Norbreck third pair 6-0 6-2 to put Burnley 6-0 ahead in matches

The final round was played out in a friendly format as Burnley had already won the match, Rushton Woods and Rowell won their final game 6-3 6-3 against Norbreck second pair with Stretton and Harris breezing past Norbreck third pair 6-2 6-1. Palmer & Northey completed the 9-0 win with a hard fought 1-6 6-4 10-3 win against the Norbreck first pair

A great start to the competition for Burnley who got through to the semi-finals last year losing to the eventually winners, Burnley will look to strengthen its team in the next round against either Bellingham or North Meols with a number of players returning to the squad.

EAST LANCS KNOCKOUT - Division 2/3/4

Burnley D team won through to the quarter finals of the division 2/3/4 East Lancs knockout on Saturday with a win away at Clitheroe A. After reaching the final last year Burnley expected a tough match against the Ribble Valley team

Burnley first pair of Scott Northey and Jez Palmer the Clitheroe first pair 6-1 7-5 to put Burnley ahead in the match, Clitheroe responded well and won the second match with James Holt and Khalid Mahmood losing out in a very close 3 set match 6-3 3-6 6-4, with all to play for and the match tied Northey & Palmer beat the Clitheroe second pair 6-3 6-2 before Holt and Mahmood stepped up their game to thrash the Clitheroe first pair 6-1 6-3 to give Burnley a 3-1 win and a place in the quarter finals

Burnley E team lost out on a place in the quarter finals of the same competition when they lost to favourites Blackburn Northern B, Northern who had beaten Burnley F team in the round before fielded a strong team for the match. Burnley team of Danny Fleming and Iain Wilkinson and Tom Mullien and Ken Greenwood fought hard throughout the match but unfortunately couldn’t match the strength and experience of Blackburn Northern, Burnley pair Fleming and Wilkinson managed to take Blackburn the distance but lost out 6-3 in the final set

Burnley A, B and C teams start their cup campaign in a couple of weeks in the Open Division 1 knockout, next Saturday sees the opening games of the East Lancs League, Burnley A take on Burnley C, Burnley B travel to Parkwood A both in Division 1, Burnley D take on Burnley E in Division 2 with Burnley F taking on Burnley G in Division 4

Ladies League, Burnley Ladies A will play Burnley Ladies B with Burnley Ladies C travelling to Blackburn Northern on Monday night, in the mixed knockout Burnley C will host Towneley A and Burnley E will play Accrington A both on Sunday in the opening round of the knockout

AEGON GAMES

The opening AEGON National club league games for Burnley 9&U and 12&U take place next weekend, the 9U will host Robin Park on Saturday morning at Burnley 10am start with the 12U travelling to Bellingham on Sunday at 2pm

Mens A team will travel to Markland Hill A, Mens B team will host Liverpool Tennis Centre at 10am and the Mens C team will host Hawkshaw A at 3pm all on Sunday
