Singles and Doubles Box Leagues
The seventh singles box league has come to a glorious conclusion; you can see the results here and if that inspires you to join in for the next round, please read on.
To see the league postions for the current season and to see our Archive of Glory, please click the links for: singles doubles
If you'd like to get involved in the next set of leagues, please email Nigel at ledburytcboxleague@gmail.com (by 18th July) to register your interest or ask any questions or use the sign-up sheet in the club house.
If you're looking to play more singles or doubles tennis, why not join our friendly and competitive box leagues. We've been running the singles league since 2022 and it's proving a great way to meet players of similar abilities regardless of age or gender.
Our doubles league is now up and running for its third season and proving popular. In this league mixed or same sex pairs compete for glory in their own doubles league. It's competitive and fun - if you don't have a doubles partner, don't worry, we can allocate you one!
Huge thanks to Nigel Long for organising and running the leagues
What's a box league?
The leagues are a great way for members to meet and play singles and doubles tennis against others of similar ability. It is where members compete against each other in a ladder. There is a singles ladder and a separate doubles ladder (including men's, ladies and mixed pairs in one league, playing against each other).
Players are organised into leagues where they are matched against opponents of similar ability. Over the course of two to three months everyone in the league plays each other in up to eight matches. Each match consists of 15 games, with each game counting as a point, so a close match could finish 8:7 with 8 points going to the winning player/pair and 7 points to the other player/pair.
There will be promotions and relegations at the end of each round to ensure players of similar ability are matched in the same box league regardless of age or sex. Our intention is to run several leagues so we can accommodate players of all abilities. So, if you want to join, there will be a league which is right for you!
Not sure if it's for you? Here's what some of the participants in the current box leagues have said:
- "Wanted to say how much I am enjoying this"
- "I have enjoyed the challenges and my opponents have been great."
- "It's been really good fun - hopefully others are enjoying it too and the more the merrier!"
- "We had a very enjoyable match this afternoon"
Kitching Cup
Congratulations to Esther and Greg for battling their way to victory at the American Tournament held on a gloriously sunny Saturday 25th May. They are now proud joint holders of the Kitching Cup.
