🏛️ Our History

Llantrisant Tennis Club was established shortly after the construction of Southgate Park in the 1930s. While few records from those early years remain, we know that Lieut. Thomas J. Wilkins of Pontyclun won the men’s singles trophy two years in a row before tragically losing his life in Normandy, 1944 during World War II.
In the 1970s, Dennis Pitman and a handful of dedicated members launched a volunteer coaching programme. This effort built a strong local player base, leading to six successive league promotions and ultimately winning the South Wales doubles league title—defeating the top teams from Cardiff and Swansea in a remarkable achievement.
As the club grew, the original two courts were no longer sufficient. In 1990, after extensive discussions with the Council, four floodlit courts with a multi-use games area were built west of Park View. However, the exposed location and surface quality proved challenging, and the club soon returned to Southgate Park.
By 1995, thanks to the dedication of a few committed volunteers and support from RCT Council, Tennis Wales, and grant funding, a third court and floodlighting were installed. Today, the club continues to be run by a group of passionate volunteers whose work, often behind the scenes, is greatly appreciated.
In 2016, Tennis Squad was engaged to manage coaching, and under their guidance, the club continues to flourish.
To secure the club’s future, it was formally established as a Company Limited by Guarantee in May 2021, ensuring full control over the courts and club operations.
