MP Gordon McKee Visits Award-Winning Newlands Park Community Tennis Centre

Glasgow, Scotland – Gordon McKee, Member of Parliament for Glasgow South, visited Newlands Park Community Tennis Centre today to congratulate staff, volunteers, and players after the centre was crowned Park Venue of the Year.

The prestigious award, presented by Tennis Scotland, recognises Newlands Park Community Tennis Centre’s exceptional contribution to local sport, community engagement, and grassroots tennis development.

During his visit, Mr McKee met with the volunteers, participated in a session with coach Jack Edward, and had the opportunity to play a few points with a club member. He praised the centre for its inclusive approach, outreach programmes, and dedication to making tennis accessible to everyone in the community.

The centre, located in the heart of Newlands Park, offers year-round tennis programmes for children, adults, and families, and has seen a surge in participation thanks to its welcoming atmosphere and high-quality coaching. Celebrating its 2nd anniversary this month, it now has over 500 members. The variety of social and coaching sessions continues to expand and the Centre has applied for funding to install lighting that will allow greater access to the courts in the evenings throughout the year.

Jamie MacDonald, Chair of Newlands Park Community Tennis Centre, said: “We’re thrilled to be recognised at a national level. This award is for our entire community – from the volunteers who give up their time, to the players who bring energy and enthusiasm every day. Newlands Park isn’t just a place to play tennis – it’s a thriving community hub where people of all ages come together to be active, social, and inspired. Having Gordon McKee visit today is a real boost for our members.”

The visit underlines Mr McKee’s continued support for grassroots sports and his commitment to championing local success stories across his constituency.
