Our Club Champs took place on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st July. Here is a summary of the weekend action.

Mixed Doubles Saturday 20th July

Our main tournament kicked off on Saturday morning with the Mixed Doubles event. The new format of shorter sets worked well, giving everyone lots of games. The teams that didn't make it past the first round were entered into the Plate Event, so lots of great tennis for everyone.

We had a bit of drizzly rain towards the end of the day, but it didn't stop play, and those who got to the BBQ before the rain worsened were also winners!

Mixed Doubles Final
Sally & Matt M versus Greta & Martin
This was a great match to watch. Brilliant tennis all round and could have gone either way. Greta and Martin took the first set 6:2 and then Sally and Matt came back, winning the second set 6:3. Sally and Matt then won a very exciting Championship Tiebreak 10:8.

Well done to runners up Greta and Martin Roger.

Mixed Doubles Plate Final
Alison Byrom & Ross v Danya & Matt
This was also a great match to watch and looked much closer than the score-line suggested. However, our regular amazing pair Alison B and Ross came out on tops with a 4:2, 4:1 win over newcomers Danya and Matt (watch this space)!

Men's and Ladies Doubles
Sunday 21st July

On the Sunday many came back for the Men’s and Ladies doubles matches, which were played in 'round robins' of full sets, giving everyone at least 2 matches. There were some very long matches, particularly in the ladies event where Sally and Chris played 59 games and a championship tiebreak! 

The weather was kinder to us for this event, with plenty of warm sunshine. We also had Terry and Alison B doing a spot of gardening, and Ian disappearing into the woods for ball collection (so he tells us). 

Ladies Final
Chris & Sally v Sam & Greta
A well fought final with Sam and Greta taking the winning sets 6:1 and 6:4 to a probably exhausted Sally and Chris.

Congratulation to Ladies Doubles Winners Sam Hutchinson and Greta and well done to runners up Sally and Chris.

Men's Final
Matt M & Martin v Benji & Matt G
Another great final to watch, which looked closer than the score-line told us. However, Mixed Doubles winner Matt M also took the Men's Doubles title with his partner Martin, winning 6:0 and 6:2 against Benji and Matt G. Great tennis all round.
