Walking Tennis

Update - Our tennis 'Starter' courses include anyone wishing to take up Walking tennis.

What is Walking Tennis?

Walking tennis is normal tennis (same court, same balls, same racket) but amended rules, similar to wheelchair tennis. The main changes are:-

1. Two bounces allowed (if needed)

2. Running is not allowed.

Who is it for?

Anyone of any age who has restricted movement. You may be recovering from an injury or illness and want to get back into a sport in a gentle manner or you may have a long term restriction and be looking for fresh air, gentle exercise and friendship.  Regular exercise will improve your cardiovascular health and reduces the chances of developing dementia.

Please make sure you get medical advice if you have restricted movement or medical conditions before attempting to join any new sport.  The odds are that Walking Tennis will be beneficial for you.

Do I need lessons?

If you have played tennis before then you probably don't need lessons. Our 'Starter' classes run by Top Bounce cater for people learning tennis and walking tennis. Our Walking Tennis guru, Richard Hendin, is an LTA level 2 instructor; he will be happy to advise you on what to expect and may be available for private coaching. His contact details are on Our coaches page.

When can I join in?

Social Walking Tennis sessions are on Wednesday mornings from 10.00 and the group often arrange amoungst themselves to play on a Friday morning. The Wednesday is a turn up session - you don't need a partner but you do need to be able to hold a rally, score and serve; if your are a beginner then we also have a court set aside for you to practice alongside the regulars.  Please contact Richard Hendin (details on our Our coaches page) or email TTC membership before attending.  There is a WhatsApp group for walking tennis players which one of the regular players can add you to if you wish. Please note that after a trial session you do need to be a member of the club to play in our social sessions.
