The annual Tennis Borders AGM was held at the G+A in Melrose on Thursday evening.
Chaired by President Eddie Brogan, the meeting covered various topics including the proposed indoor tennis centre at the new Galashiels Academy which has hit many stumbling blocks, but we are still hopeful of a successful conclusion.
Various trophies were presented on the night including the Sandra Harkness award for Endeavour and Dedication. Three nominations had been received - Claire Townsend of St Boswells for all her hard work in organising the many teams and general positive attitude in and around the club, Anne McKinnon of Peebles for all her work in developing the clubs' new courts and revitalised clubhouse, and Leslie Young for his many years of service as treasurer and multiple other roles at Melrose. All three received a small trophy in recognition of our gratitude for all they have done for their clubs. The ultimate overall winner this year was Les Young.
The other presentation on the night was one that is rarely awarded - the Tennis Borders Lifetime Achievement award. Previous winner Christine Lawrie spoke about why it was fitting that local legend Jock Henderson be awarded this most prestigious trophy for all his very many years in Borders tennis. Not just as a young man playing high quality tennis for Jedburgh but for the time he has given in serving as a referee for around 25 years on the Adult and Junior annual tournaments, providing valuable coaching for many gifted players, sitting on local and national committees and in general being a great ambassador for Borders tennis over most of his lifetime.
Jock thanked everyone for the award saying that he didn't feel worthy and then recounted various tales of trying to promote Borders tennis to a wider audience such as realising that the only way to be noticed at National meetings was to be the most unruly and controversial person there - totally out of character for Jock, but he left no stone unturned in pushing Borders tennis!
Eddie thanked everyone for attending and brought the meeting to a close after he also received a small thankyou award for his time staying on as President whilst he pursues every avenue to try to persuade the powers that be to deliver on the long promised indoor courts.
