Border Counties Lawn Tennis Tournament. 

The Borders County Lawn Tennis Tournament, played alternately at Hawick and Galashiels and which is continued over three days, was begun on the court of the Galashiels club at Langhaugh. The entries were not so numerous as in former years, and there was a decreasing number of crack players from a distance. The court was in fine condition, and the weather was good all over the three days. The leading interest over the tournament turned on the chances of some local player hindering Mr Carvosso from winning the silver cup, value £25, in which event it would have become his own, having won it two years running:  he was beaten in the final by Mr A Thomson. The play was good all through, and the results in the final rounds were as follows:

Ladies' Singles.- Miss H J Sanderson Beat Miss Turnbull.

Ladies' Doubles.- Miss Paterson and Miss Sanderson beat Miss Mercer and Miss D Morrison.

Gentlemens' Singles Border Championship. - Mr A Thomson beat Mr A B Carvosso

Gentlemens' Singles 2d Class.- Mr N E Rae beat Mr W F Cochrane

Gentlemens' Doubles.- Messrs Carvosso and Gray beat Messrs Glenny

Ladies and Gentlemens' Doubles 2d Class.- Miss Sanderson and Mr W H Gray beat Miss Turnbull and Mr A B Carvosso

TB Note: Mr Carvosso (pictured above) was an Australian and possibly the first from that country to win tournaments abroad. Obviously a very fine player but maybe just as well he didn't win the above trophy outright as apparently he had to melt down most of his trophies to help pay his Edinbugh Uni debts.. some things never change!
