Aegon Classic Volunteers Day

Aegon Classic Volunteer Blog- by Daniel Lucas

As I mentioned in my previous blog, I am a huge tennis fan and when the opportunity came to volunteer at the Aegon Classic Tournament I was straight in there.

For those of you who don’t know, the Aegon classic is one of the biggest grass court tournaments in the UK for the WTA. Once reading all the exciting things I could potentially be doing as a volunteer, the excitement grew and I submitted my online application form.

The next stage of the application was the ‘Volunteer Selection Day’. The day arrived and I was nervous, I didn’t know what to expect. Was it going to be formal, like an interview? Was I able to make myself stand out from the rest?  When I arrived, I was increasingly becoming more nervous. We all made our way to the room where we were introduced to Hugh, the volunteer manager for the Aegon Classics.

We had a little presentation highlighting all the exciting roles to offer and the day to day tasks we will be completing and then it was time for the selection process! We were divided into little groups and presented with a task; Space Survival. We had to pick the top 5 essential items needed to survive space and find the ‘Mothership’. Not too sure what the link to tennis is! We discussed this task with our group and then presented our thoughts back to the group. From comparing to the official survival list by NASA, my group achieved 3 out of 5. Not too bad if I do say so myself.

Our final task including scenarios we may be faced with if we became a volunteer. There were a range of scenarios presented to us from disruption around centre court to lost children. We discussed what we would do in our subgroups and then presented or ideas back to the whole group.

And that was it, I did all I could do. Now we had to wait. I waited and waited and then, it came. The email to congratulate or commiserate me. I’d done it! I am now a volunteer at the Aegon Classics!!

The next step is the training day where we learn all there is to know about the Aegon Classics and what we will be required to do and get our FREE Nike uniform, bonus!

Hopefully I will see some of you around the Aegon Classics for some high quality tennis!
