Update on Court 3-5 Resurfacing

South Wales Sports Grounds have completed the resurfacing of courts 3, 4, and 5 and released them to the club for play from today. All 3 courts are now available in the booking system.

  • Like all new artificial turf courts it'll take a while for each court to "settle-in", and in particular for the newly applied sand infill to become evenly distributed throughout the playing area for an even and consistent bounce.
  • You can help by playing on the new courts as much as possible over the coming weeks. The club has agreed a quarterly court maintenance schedule with SWSG but, just as we do for the clay courts, we ask for your support to follow some standard court care procedures each time you play.
  • Clear any plant debris before brushing - use the rubber rakes or club battery powered leaf blower to clear the court of any plant debris to help prevent it rotting-down into the court pile. Any plant debris around the perimeter / corner of the courts will be collected on a regular basis.
  • Brush the court before play - brushing lifts the pile and helps the sand infill become / remain evenly distributed, prevents surface compaction, maintains drainage, and deters moss and algae growth.
  • Avoid leaving any food stuffs or food waste on the court - any organic matter which finds it's way into the court pile promotes moss and algae growth.

Look out for the new court brushes and rubber rakes which will arrive soon and be stored on court.

The battery powered leaf blower is stored in the men's changing room.

We'll give you another update when the court resurfacing project is fully complete - including the resurfacing of the mini-courts and practice-wall area, the installation of mesh screening along the boundary adjacent to the stream (to help minimise the amount of wind-blown plant debris coming onto the courts), and some mesh screening on the fences of courts 1 and 3 to reduce the glare from the Abergavenny Football Club floodlights during evening play.

In the meantime, thank you again for your patience and cooperation whilst the work has proceeded, and enjoy the new courts.
