Barnton Park Centenary Challenge 2019

The 2019 BP Centenary Challenge Junior Open Tournament took place over the weekend - with the U9 events opening things up on Friday evening and the U8 event closing things off late Sunday afternoon/early evening.  In between we had a full schedule of Boys and Girls events in the U14 and U 18 age groups.

We again had a wonderfully successful tournament - with some great tennis on show.  For anyone who likes their tennis this is an event well worth coming to watch.

In terms of the event itself we had 87 entries; played 135 matches; played 200 sets; and played some 1,693 games overall.

We had 6 players from the club competing - which is great to see.   Expanding involvement and experiencing a tournament environment were, and remain, our priority in this tournament - so it is pleasing that our Juniors continue to compete, to play their best, and to continue to develop as people and players.

ALL are a credit to the club and we are proud of them!!  Congratulations to:

  • Matthew Watt - U8 Mixed (Red Ball)
  • Patrick Gilchrist - U9 Mixed Champion (Orange Ball)
  • Lilliana McFarlane - U14 Girls Runner-Up
  • Archie Robertson - U14 Boys
  • Ross Macartney - U14 Boys (Main Draw - 3rd)
  • Mungo Forbes-Cable - U14 Boys (Consolation Draw - Champion)

Finally - can I add a personal thanks to:

  • Linda Gordon for stepping in at late notice to referee on Friday evening ... and for her unstinting support over the weekend.
  • Those worthy souls who gave of either, or sometimes both of, their time and culinary skills to help make the tournament the success it is.

As I said last year - for those who have always wanted to get involved more with the club, weekends such as these provide a great opportunity to meet and make friends - and to see the club at its most vibrant.

Please come forward and volunteer to help at club events - you really do get a lot from it.
