Bowling

Welcome to the Bowling Section of the Bowdon Bowling and Lawn Tennis Club (BBLTC)

We are a group of friendly / sociable men and women who enjoy getting together in the fresh air, to play Crown Green Bowles year round (weather permitting) in the beautiful surroundings of our  historic club grounds.

Our club was formed in 1873 as the Bowdon Bowling and Croquet Club and expanded in 1875 by the inclusion of a 999 year lease of land (currently owned by The National Trust) on which the extensive bowling Green, its surroundings and the clubhouse now stand. In 1907 the Croquet Club relocated to their present location on the opposite side of St, Mary's Road and we changed into the Bowdon Bowling and Lawn Tennis Club

We pride ourselves that our club is open to all-comers regardless of age or initial ability. In many cases our members may not have played Crown Green Bowls but we're exploring ways of promoting simple exercise and / or extending their social circle.

We have spare bowls available  for new members to borrow to try out the green and discover if Crown Green bowling is what they choose to play. As new members find their feet and look to progress within the club we can generally offer a selection of used bowls from our stocks (at reasonable prices) and of course we can steer members towards local suppliers who offer a full range of equipment to suit all players.

Social Bowling

We currently hold 'social bowling' sessions every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday afternoons throughout the year (weather permitting) running between 2pm and 4pm in Spring and Summer moving to 1.30pm to 3pm in late Autumn and Winter. With a break for refreshments in the clubhouse at about 3pm year round.

Please note that bowling teams re selected on the day by drawing numbers - this provides a regular rotation of playing partners and  facilitates the integration of new members, to permit this process members are requested to arrive at the clubhouse 10 minutes or so before the start of play.

Training

Within the club we have bowlers (both men and women) with a range of experience who will happily provide advice and coaching as needed to get new members established and comfortable with the game. From there we can, through our affiliations with Cheshire County of the British Crown Green Bowling Association, guide members towards more focused professional coaching if desired.

League Competition

We are registered members of the Trafford Evening Bowling League (TBEL) . This is a mixed team event and provides a friendly if competitive atmosphere at weekly home and away games on Thursday Evenings across the summer season. Please refer to the Affiliations page in the menu for further details and links.

Activities during the year

Throughout the year we hold a number of optional social events and activities, counted among these will be:-

Annual Dinner   This is our awards presentation evening generally held in November.

Winter Warmer   Informal get together generally on a Sunday afternoon in February.

Spring Supper   Informal meal held in April

Away Day    Each June we travel to a different green (around Cheshire) for lunch and friendly bowls

Strawberry Tea  An afternoon of bowling and socialising in our own club grounds generally in July

In additional to these events we hold various 'in club' competitions which are either 'open' or 'handicap' format playing as individuals or in pairs. These games are spread over the summer months and culminate in a finals day in late summer where the allocation of club silverware is decided. We also hold one-off 'round robin' competitions on Bank Holidays in May and August.
