Men's 1st Team Promoted to Southern Premiership League

The Cardiff Met Tennis Men's 1st Team edge a marathon match in a shoot-out against King's College London to earn promotion into the BUCS Southern Premiership League. The team will now compete nationally across the South of England in a bid to earn promotion into the BUCS National Super League.

For the first time since 2012, Cardiff Met are back in the national leagues of university tennis. After a year of hard-graft, the team are rewarded with the taste of victory which propels them up the British university tennis leagues.

Alex Hyman and Evan Kennedy kicked off proceedings with a 6-3 4-6 10-6 win at no.1 doubles. Harry Lear and Maian Minnaar fell just short as King's College London levelled the tie following a 6-3 1-6 10-8 victory.

The singles matches went neck and neck all the way through. Evan Kennedy put Cardiff Met back in the lead with a dominant 6-1 6-3 performance. However, King's College didn't back down, winning the no.3 and no.4 singles 6-2 6-3 and 7-6 6-0 respectively.

3-2 down in matches, it was not looking good for Cardiff Met without a comeback from Alex Hyman at the no.1 singles spot. Hyman managed to claw back from a set down to beat Ali Hassan 3-6 6-4 10-6 and level the playoff.

Into the shoot-out we went...

Harry Lear showed his mental strength and athletic prowess to beat his conqueror in the previous singles. As Hyman was match point down, Lear won 12-10 in the championship tiebreak to put Cardiff Met one tiebreak away from the victory.

The Archers so close to victory, Hyman dismissed thoughts of a final doubles shoot-out by fighting back to claim the tiebreak 11-9 and ultimately secure promotion.
