Cardiff Met & Mackintosh TC Team Compete in National Premier League Finals in London

After joining forces in 2022, the Cardiff Met and Mackintosh Tennis Club team just missed out clinching an upset against 6th seeds University of Nottingham.

Since 2002, the National Premier League has been the highest standard of league tennis in Great Britain. Over 100 tennis teams now compete in the Worldpay NPL and battle it out for over £15,000 in prize money.

After finishing 2nd place behind the University of Bath in the league, Cardiff Met headed to the qualifying for the NPL Finals. Callum Findlay and Freddie Davies were the pair to keep Welsh hopes alive for the only Welsh team to appear in the finals.

Two wins from two in qualifying meant that Findlay and Davies booked Cardiff Met’s spot in the finals to be held at the prestigious St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club in London.

Onto the finals…

Cardiff Met were drawn against the no.6 seeds University of Nottingham in the first round. A stern test but the team of Callum Findlay, Freddie Davies, Alex Hyman and Evan Kennedy were certainly up for the challenge.

Two matches played and Cardiff Met were 2-0 up. Findlay/Davies defeated Rueben Newman-Billington & Freddie Davies 6-2 6-2. Hyman/Kennedy defeated Jamie Crowfoot & Marcus Walters 6-3 3-6 10-3.

Nottingham fought back and earned themselves two three-set wins and levelled the tie 2-2 to take the match into a shootout match tiebreak.

Findlay & Hyman were the ones with the challenge of the match shootout. A tense encounter, point after point was played. Cardiff Met secured themselves match points on two occasions, but couldn’t break the deadlock. Nottingham eventually held out and took the tiebreak 13-11.

The team will come back fighting for more next year, so keep an eye for more NPL news.
