Colinton Lawn Tennis Club is one of the largest tennis clubs in Edinburgh, with approximately 400 members. A professional coach is attached to the club.
The club has six all-weather courts consisting of sand-filled synthetic grass. The courts are available for play throughout the year. The three back courts were resurfaced in October 2012 with advanced Tiger Turf Advantage Pro. The three front courts were resurfaced in April 2014 with the same surface. Three of the courts are floodlit allowing play to continue until 10.00 p.m. outside the summer months.
A new and modern clubhouse was built in 1991, replacing the original one, and has been completely refurbished in 2010. It is equipped with large changing rooms, showers, a well-maintained kitchen (refurbished in 2016) and a social area. There is a veranda at the front of the clubhouse.
A practice wall was built in 1991 next to the clubhouse to allow players to warm up and practise their shot-making skills. This was renovated in 2010 and there is now an excellent surface and a "true" return.
Upkeep of the Club
The club retains a part-time groundsman, who also cleans the clubhouse. Members are therefore not asked to perform these additional tasks, although the costs involved need to be covered by the subscriptions.
The club runs a development plan to keep its facilities up to date, and maintains a 'sinking fund' for financing future projects. In 2002 Courts 1 to 3, the floodlighting on these courts, and the fencing surrounding all six courts were replaced and upgraded. An interest-free loan secured from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) helped pay for these improvements. A recent major capital investment was the replacement of three of our six courts with the advanced Tiger Turf Advantage Pro playing surfaces. The remaining three (front) courts have been renewed with the same surface in April 2014. The Committee intend to continue to utilise the club's capital for the maintenance of the courts and surrounds.
