Michael Oliver Tournament 2018

Michael Oliver Memorial Tournament 2018

For those of you who didn't know him, Michael Oliver was a long standing  member and player for the club.  He won numerous club tournaments in his time and holds the record for the most number of Gentlemen's Singles titles, at 11.  He sadly passed away a few years ago but is fondly remembered by many still at the club, which is why this tournament has been named in his honour.

The format is a mixed handicap event with players entering paired together in what will hopefully produce even contests.  Each match is one set in a round robin format, so every pair gets to play the others, with a winner being produced at the conclusion based on how many matches a pair has won.

On Friday 7th September we met at the club for the second iteration of the tournament, with 7 pairs battling it out for the chance to lift the cup.  The weather started out sunny, but the last light of day soon faded and it became a little chilly, however we kept ourselves warm by cracking on with each game and firing up the BBQ to cook some much needed sustenance.

All but one round of games were completed as we played on until past 10pm.  There were some excellent games and lots of fun to be had on and off court as the evening progressed.  However, the clear winners, having not dropped a set all evening, were Alison Plummer and Chrissy Thomas.

I said during the presentation that it was good to gather together on occasions such as these and play, have good fun and catch up with one another in order to honour Michael's legacy at the club, and hopefully we will continue to do so for many years yet to come.
