League Season Review 2019

Ladies A - Div 1

The Ladies A had won the title for the first time in 20 years last season, so were under pressure to repeat the feat again.  Their main rivals were Biddestone and, due to their bye week, our ladies were trailing for much of the season.  However, they picked up enough points each week to stay in contention and when they played their game in hand they moved to the top.  Despite winning one game less than Biddestone and a an unexpected draw towards the end of the season, they went into their final game needing 5 points to win the title.  Saving their best performance for last they won 8-0 to emphatically reclaim the top honours.

Ladies B - Div 2

The Ladies B had a strong start to the season and led for much of the first half being in the presence of some strong other teams after a redesign of the league structure and number of teams in each division.  They were pulled back by Marshfield A who went on to win the division comfortably, but the B's held on to claim second place and hopefully promotion next year.

Ladies C - Div 2

The league rearrangement saw the Ladies C unexpectedly promoted into Division 2 and so facing a tough season ahead.  They went forward into it with relish however and performed well, running close with two other teams for much of the season in the battle to avoid relegation.  Unfortunately they came up just short in the end, finishing in 8th place.

Ladies D - Div 4

The Ladies D were also moved up a division as an entire league was lost in the changes made.  There have been many new match players playing for the Ladies D this year who have all played well and enjoyed their tennis despite a tough season results wise.  They also finished in 8th position in their league.

Mens A - Div 1

It was an up and down season for the Mens A.  Starting out with a bye week and then playing two of the top teams, they found themselves behind early on and were possibly facing the prospect of a relegation battle.  However some good and fortunate results went their way and they climbed back up the table to finish in a creditable 3rd place.

Mens B - Div 2

The B's struggled to find their form for most of the season and they were gradually sucked into the bottom two places, from where they were unable to escape, finishing in 6th out of 7.  This probably means that they will go down into Division 3 next year, where they will meet the C team.

Mens C - Div 3

The Mens C started the season strongly, being the team that helps blood some of our younger players into the league.  Many teams were of a similar standard in the division and results could often have gone either way.  The C's finished in mid table, never in any danger of being relegated, and will look forward to playing the B team next year.

Mens D - Div 4

Like the Ladies C and D, the Mens D were expecting to play a division lower this year after last years results, however they once again found themselves in Division 4 and set themselves the target of beating their finishing score from last year, which they did.  They were close to finishing off of the bottom, tied with Biddestone B on games won, drawn and lost, but had 4 points less and so finished in 7th

Mixed A - Div 1

The Mixed A had the expectation and pressure on them of having won the title for the past 4 year, but that did not stop them.  Trying out a new set of pairs for the majority of the season, they still finished in first fairly comfortably, as well as retaining the Mixed Knockout Cup.

Mixed B - Div 1

The B team had finished in second behind the A's for the past 2 years, but unfortuneately could not repeat that feat for a third time, being pushed into third by Frome A.  They had to chop and change their personell a few times in order to help out the C team which affected some of their results, however they were comfortably in the top half of the table, and will hope to be again next year.

Mixed C - Div 2

The Mixed C team started the season well and it soon became apparent that they had a genuine opportunity to finish in the top two and hopefully acheive promotion to Division 1 next year.  They played well and with a few games left their fate was in their own hands, needing 6 points from their final match to ensure first place.  Unfortunately they could not get the number and were overtaken by Iconoclasts in their last match, losing out by 3 points.  However, they should still go up a division next year, giving the club an unprecedented 3 teams in a top division.

Mixed D - Div 5

Mixed Division 5 was quite a close league, with many teams averaging 4 or 5 points a game.  The D's remained constant throughout and had the best game difference in the division, despite not winning as many games.  They had to be reliant on other results before they knew theif finishing position.  They were top for large parts of the season but it looked like they may be overtaken by teams below them with games in hand.  However, as the league was a closely contested one, these teams could not secure the larger points required to overtake them.  The D's finished top by just half a point and can look forward to playing in Division 4 next year.
