MENS OVER 35s GAIN PROMOTION
GO DEVON!!!
Playing at a sunny Devonshire Park in Eastbourne, the Men's 35 Team, consisting of Captain - Adam Tapp, Ricki Foster, Bruce Wheatley, Mikey Neild and Stefan Lupu knew promotion was possible if performances matched the will!
Starting later on Friday 9th August, due to overnight dew, the matches were shortened to a fast 4 format. We were up against Buckinghamshire. Bruce kicked off the day with a 4-3 2-4 11-9 win, followed by Ricki Foster winning 3-4 4-3 10-3, putting Devon 2-0 up. Adam Tapp and Mikey Nield then took to the doubles court winning their 2 matches 4-3 4-3 and 4-3 1-4 10-7. Ricki and Stefan then completed the 5-0 win with a 4-3 4-2 win. A great start. 10 tie breaks, 9 won!
Saturday - Devon vs Cornwall & back to full sets! Stefan kicked us off with a hard fought (on court and fighting cramp!) 7-6 3-6 11-9 win. Ricki on next, winning a mammoth battle 6-4 1-6 10-7 to again, put Devon 2-0 up after the singles. Adam and Mikey unfortunately lost both their doubles, against strong Cornwall pairings, 4-6 4-6, and 4-6 3-6 meaning the score was 2-2. Down to the final rubber, which Ricki and Bruce won 6-3 6-1! A huge 3-2 win for Devon!
13 tie breaks 12 won!
Sunday came, along with sore backs, elbows and stiff legs! Essex were the opposition. Playing to aches and pains, after a team meeting, knowing a win today would promote the team to Division 3, the team format was decided. Adam went up first winning the first singles 6-3 3-6 10-5. Ricki again playing singles won 6-0 6-3, putting Devon 2-0 up after the singles rounds. Enter..... Bruce and Stefan knowing a win would secure promotion for the team, and guess what.... yes, they won it on a tie break 6-2 7-6! Devon were promoted!! The remaining two doubles were played to ensure completeness, Stefan and Mikey winning 7-6 6-3, Ricki and Adam losing 6-3 3-6 6-10.
17 tie breaks played, 15 won! "Tie Break Devon" we became!
Congratulations to the team, a fantastic and supportive all round display! Thanks to the supporters who came to cheer us on, and all those who supported the team throughout the weekend, from afar! GO DEVON.
