DEVON BOYS ARE 10U COUNTY CUP CHAMPIONS 2021
on home turf at Atlantic Racquets Centre in Bideford!
The boys had to work hard for their spots in the team with only 6 places available and 19 boys up for selection. After two county cup training sessions and one team training session, the team of Charlie, Leo, Nicholas, Harry, Reuben O and Reuben B was formed.
The team arrived early for practice which was led physically by playing captain Charlie. Coach/captain Liam Storey then took the hitting warm up and got the boys in the right frame of mind for competing.
The boys got off to a flyer with a 6-0 win over Cornwall with straight forward wins in the singles for Charlie, Harry, Reuben O and Reuben B. Charlie and Harry then played first pair doubles and won convincingly and Leo and Nicholas teamed up and won at second pair doubles.
Next up were tougher opposition – Avon. The boys got off to a good start with strong wins by Reuben B 4-0, 4-1 coming off first, and then Harry won 4-1, 4-1. Both boys played solid tennis and were focused throughout. Charlie had a tough match at 1 and lost in straight sets but fought hard. Reuben O came back from a set down (2-4) after taking a fall and won the second set 4-0 and the match tiebreak 10-7. Great determination displayed throughout. This put Devon into a 3-1 lead. Down to the doubles and 1 more win needed for victory! Leo and Nick teamed up and whistled through their match against the Avon second pair and played some excellent doubles which crowned Devon champions of the group. The final rubber, Harry and Charlie vs Avon number 1 pair was a really close match and Devon lost narrowly on a match tiebreak.
The boys showed really good team spirit and supported each other all day despite the terrible weather.. They worked hard for themselves, each other and the county. Team Captain Liam and Performance Manager Will McNally were very proud of the boys’ attitude on and off the court. Thanks to Hannah Miller (Devon Coach) for supporting the boys today too, and to ARC for the great venue. Lastly, thank you to the parents for their support today and to Linda Hill (referee) for running the event.
