Our History
FLTC has a proud and long-standing heritage in the community. Our first recorded mention dates back to 1881, and tennis has been played at Gores Lane since the late 19th century. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the club hosted one of the biggest open tournaments in the North of England, attracting top national and international players.
Over the decades the club has continued to evolve, expanding its courts, modernising its facilities and strengthening its role in local sport. Highlights include hosting England vs Ireland in 1985, winning the national Silk Cut Tennis Challenge at Queen's Club in 1996, and securing the freehold of the grounds in 2002.
Today, FLTC combines this rich heritage with ongoing investment in modern facilities, including full clubhouse refurbishment, LED floodlighting and the introduction of padel in 2024.
