The finals of the Hospital Cup were held at Stebbing on Saturday 22nd September. The weather was far from ideal with steady rain from midday onwards, however their hard courts held up remarkably well and the tennis continued. The Grove emerged victorious in the mixed doubles with Paul Kent and Clare Jackson defeating Stebbing pair Josh McDowell and Leticia Douglas 6-3, 6-2. Paul and Des Noctor made the final of the men’s doubles, but were defeated after a close second set tiebreak by the talented brothers, Mike and Richard Cosgrove from Clavering who had beaten Tom Bowers and Adrian Brown in their semi final. Other winners included Katie Harris, Henham (ladies singles) and mother/daughter pair Petra and Julia Studholme, Elsenham (ladies doubles). The men’s singles final was not played due to a mix up in scheduling.
Thanks to everyone from the Grove who entered the competition this year. Once again, the Grove provided the largest entry and all entry fees and raffle ticket monies go straight to the Saffron Walden Hospital League of Friends Charity with over £1,200 being raised.
