Competition News

The summer L&W season is well underway with all teams producing some strong performances.  At time of writing, the Men's 1st and 2nd team currently sit 3rd and 4th in their respective divisions, while the 3rd team are in top spot!

Our Ladies 1st team are locked in battle at the bottom of division 3, despite close matches all round including a victory for Margaret and Rosemary 11-9 in a championship tiebreak against Kent Elms.

In the Mixed, the 1st team have gone unbeaten overall so far, and are chasing Leigh Road Baptist for promotion. Our 2nd team are leading their division, with a recent  mammoth effort from Ryan and Pauline who came out on top 11-13 in a championship tiebreak against Westcliff Lawn.

Thank you to all for representing the club, and thank you to all team captains for your continued efforts. Keep it up!

Scouts

On Monday 3rd June we gave a warm welcome 1st Hadleigh Scout Group who took part in a Tennis taster session at our club. Almost 50 young people aged from 6 - 14 got the chance to try Tennis. For many it was their first time. The feedback was amazing and they all had an amazing time.

L&W Summer Ball

A number of members attended the annual L&W Summer Ball on the 8th June. The event was bigger & better than ever before and at maximum capacity. It was a great evening with great food & drink + entertainment including Joe Palmer, a local L&W Tennis player who has a talent for singing including songs from "The Greatest Showman" soundtrack. On this special evening too, a new award was announced in memory of Lloyd Burton and for the 1st year was posthumously given to Lloyd and accepted by his family. From next year and every year then on, someone within our 16 L&W clubs who goes above and beyond to support our Tennis Community will win this award. Towards the end of the evening we accepted our trophy for winning the league in the Winter Mixed 1st team. Next year, our aim is to double that achievement (or triple) and win 3 leagues. As the competition report above shows, we're in a good position and need to continue to hold the league in a number of division leagues.

Electronic Board

Hopefully some of you have noticed our TV screen has been increasing in "we hope" useful information along with our original Digital Honours Board. New functionality includes automatic update and display of our club's most recent L&W matches and an ability to schedule any video, photo or website content easily at the touch of a button. With thanks to Jonathan Perkins for doing a complete rewrite v2 of this system. If you have any ideas of what we can display on the screen, please do reach out to us.

PledgeBall

Perhaps you have seen the video running on the TV in the clubhouse, maybe you have not. Anyhow the LTA are running a fantastic initiative to ask all clubs and their members to 'pledge' small things they can do to help the planet. This could be as a simple as pledging to go without meat for one day a week or cycling to work.

And here's what's in it for you bit... Enter a pledge and be in the chance to WIN a pair of tickets to the WTA 500 event held at The Queen’s Club in 2025!

Currently we're 4th in the country on the Leaderboard, which either says not many people are taking part or some of you have already started pledging. If you have, amazing, if not, please hit this link and pledge something to save our planet. You never know we might be able to win £500 for our club

Chris Phillips

On Saturday 29th June, Chris Phillips from Southend Lawn / Evening Echo sports reporter will be taking on a brand new charity fundraising challenge for SECE Mind to which he's already raised over £115k. This challenge involves him walking to all 16 L&W Clubs, a total distance of 35miles. Chris is due at our club at 3:30p.m and the plan is for him to take part in a little Tennis so when you see him arrive, please welcome him and pause your social game and let him join in please.

He can't stay long as he's on a very busy schedule. If you fancy joining him on a leg, perhaps from our club to his next club, get in contact with Chris, at chris.phillips@newsquest.co.uk

Also please bring a little cash with you and donate generously
