Cross celebrates Wimbledon double (again)

Travelling the world did little to affect the form of Haverfordwest tennis star Jeremy Cross, with the 49 year-old returning to Wimbledon to defend his two British Masters titles last week.

Cross won the men’s over 45 singles and doubles events at the British Masters Grass Court Closed Championships at the All England Club.

Seeded number one in the singles after his 2024 triumph, Cross sailed through the rounds before meeting number three seed Aidan Graveson in the final.

Despite dropping the first set 6-2, Cross came roaring back to win 6-0 in the second before sealing victory with a 6-3 final set.

Cross again teamed up with Andrew Birse in the doubles and it was a repeat of the 2024 final against Jason Donoghue and Richard Downs.

Cross and Birse won in straight sets (6-3 6-4) to claim their third title in a row.

The latest International Tennis Federation (ITF) world rankings reflect Cross’ recent success, he has risen 12 places up to 13th in the world.

“I’ve had the opportunity to compete in some incredible international tournaments this year in Japan, Turkey and Guatemala,” said Cross who has spent the past 12 months travelling with his family.

“However, winning at Wimbledon with all its history and tradition is the best of all of them by far.

“I go up to the over 50s next year so it was very satisfying to finish this age category with a win and beat all the younger guys.”
