Tributes as club stalwart Sue steps down as treasurer

One of Haverfordwest Tennis Club’s longest serving committee members, Sue Jones, has stood down as treasurer after almost 40 years in the role.

As well as ably handling the club’s finances, Sue was a long-standing membership secretary and also helped out with coaching.

She held a post in the South Wales League set-up and is a member of the Pembrokeshire Lawn Tennis Association committee which runs the annual open tournaments at The Parade.

Sue, who still packs a mean forehand at 80, was and remains a ready hand in the day-to-day management of the club, whether that be weeding, mending nets or umpiring matches.

Her remarkable contribution, along with husband Gary, was recognised at Thursday’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), where Sue was presented with flowers and a gift voucher for the Grove Narberth as a small thank you.

As well as tributes from the chairman Dean Richards, Tennis Wales also sent a note of thanks.

Head of participation Jamie Clewer said volunteers like Sue are “the lifeblood of tennis and indeed grassroots sport in Wales.

“Sue epitomises the very best of volunteering and community spirit in our great sport,” he said.

“Haverfordwest Tennis Club is an exceedingly well run club and whilst the club has faced some challenging times with the loss of indoor courts in recent years, despite these setbacks the welcome and positivity I receive and see, whenever I visit is second to none.

“The club feels like a genuine family with everyone pulling in the same direction and the health of the club and your recent on court improvements are testament to that.

“Sue is always at the absolute heart of that welcome and positivity whenever I visit.”

Sue will remain on the committee with Alison Dixon appointed the new treasurer.

Tributes were also paid at the AGM to former chairman Peter Lilley who recently passed away.

Peter served at chairman for 15 years and continued to support the club after stepping down in 2020.

The club will remember Peter with great fondness and sends its thoughts and condolences to Andrea and the family.
