"I've played tennis since I was 5 and have been a member of the Club for just as long! I spent time on the committee as the junior representative before I went to university where I was lucky enough to get to play on their teams. Since I graduated, I have taken on the role of secretary. My favourite memory with the Club has to be finals day - it's great to have so many members down the courts, lots of tennis on display and a great atmosphere. I played my first Club Tournament Final when I was 11. I hadn't played much competitive tennis before and believed myself to be playing a best of 5 sets match! Therefore, when the umpire was announcing I'd won (after 2 sets), I didn't realise I just asked if I could go and get a drink!"

"I first played tennis at secondary school and made the school team - as much for my enthusiasm as for any degree of skill. At 16 I was lucky enough to go on a school trip to Wimbledon where I completely fell in love with the game and became an avid spectator. However, I didn't play again until my early 30's after the White Horse Tennis Centre opened in Abingdon. I rather hesitantly joined their beginner group coaching sessions but progressed to intermediate level and subsequently started playing competitively in the singles ladders. After having my daughter, I found it difficult to get to the sessions in Abingdon and was frustrated by the lack of court availability. So I joined KBS instead where I was welcomed by players of a similar level who persuaded me to go to Sunday morning Open sessions and start group coaching. As my daughter got older, I had more time and tennis became my regular exercise as it was flexible enough to be able to arrange to play to fit in with my family commitments. I was then co-opted onto the women's C team and started playing League matches. I found the matches really sociable and surprisingly unpressured as we were playing in the lowest Division in the League. As I was getting so much out of the club, I decided to give something back and took on the role of Match Secretary when the vacancy arose. Subsequently, I then became Captain of the then women's B team. I've really enjoyed mixing with players of all levels within the club and taking part in the annual club competition. I also now enjoy playing mixed doubles competitively - although I do feel sorry for whoever gets me as their partner as they have to work a lot harder to compensate for my limitations!"

"I began playing rugby at the age of 11 for my school and my local club Abingdon RFC. I went on to play as an adult for many years enjoying the game and the social life. I began to play tennis 9 years ago after I was encouraged by two senior players (Doug & Nigel) while collecting my eldest daughter from her lesson. I have enjoyed playing tennis ever since and play for the men’s B team. I am an LTA level 1 & 2 tennis coach and volunteer with the mini green players with Tom each week. I am also one of the organisers of the annual KBS tennis festival and have organised other social events with club members. I am looking forward to having 4 courts available so we can arrange some friendly tournaments with other clubs and continue the growth of the club for all levels of players."

"My happy place is chasing a ball around a pitch or courtwhether that’s netball, hockey or tennis just don’t expect meto sit down for long!"

"When reaching the age of 40, the injuries I sustained while playing rugby were taking their toll, so I decided to retire from the game. I then took up water skiing, bought a ski boat and joined the 3t’s Water Sports Club in Standlake. It was here I was first introduced to tennis, the club having its own tennis court. The club held an annual mixed doubles tournament which I had the pleasure of winning on at least 3 separate occasions, each with different partners. I first joined KBS tennis club with my wife Carole in the mid 80’s, soon after it first opened. Unfortunately with work commitments starting up Rogers Motor Factors, I had little time to play so my membership lapsed. I rejoined the club about 3 or 4 years ago and was soon coerced by Andy Dance and Pete Osman to join the committee. I seem now to have adopted the role of club maintenance man, having a natural ability for DIY, which during lockdown, has been a life saver keeping me busy. A couple of seasons ago I was appointed captain of the C-team. Wish it was because of my tennis ability. Unfortunately, I only got the job because no one else would do it. I’m always looking for new players so if you're interested in playing competitively with a great bunch of blokes, then please, please get in touch."
Jonathan Shorter
"I am a late starter and have only been playing tennis since joining the Club about 5 years ago! I run a local building company called Lemontree and as a member of the Committee have used this experience to help with the planning process for and construction of the new courts, we should feel really lucky to have such a great facility in our community."
