Club Championships 2025
The Club Championships 2025 were a great success running over 3 consecutive weekends in August. As always the Womens being well attended and competitive. After a couple of slow years the Mens has bounced back by copying the Womens' 1-day format to get everyone together playing and excited for future Championships. Thank you to all those who came to play and watch!
Mixed Doubles - Sun 17th Aug 2025
We kicked off a 3 weekend run of the 2025 Club Championships with the Mixed Doubles in a balmy 25ºC heat with 3 men and 3 women entering the draw; numbers will need to be improved upon next year! The format was decided so that every woman should play with every man and the best pairings would play a full set as the final.
The qualifier 4-game matches were good fun and players needed to adapt quickly when mixing up pairings. Nice to see some locals coming to watch.
The final was going the way of mother and son team Annabel and Alexander with Annabel serving well and Alexander’s leftie forehands causing problems and forcing errors from the opposing team. However with a dramatic turn of momentum Karen and Euan found their form and maintained it through the rest of the match securing the win.
Mixed Doubles winners: Euan Callus & Karen Dekker
Mixed Doubles runners up: Annabel Gaywood & Alexander Satkauskas
Ladies - Sun 31st Aug 2025
A great day of tennis, food & chat! We were glad to be wearing sun caps rather than waterproofs as previously forecast and were only slightly troubled by the blustery wind.
5 ladies braved singles in the morning - we kept the matches short at 20 mins each, a full set for the finals. More joined us for a fab lunch, with 11 playing doubles in the afternoon (yes that did tax our brains at first!).
Our club coach Richard Knapman would have been proud of the standard of play! Congratulations to the winners!
Singles winner: Val Houston
Singles runner up: Lizzie Millar
Doubles winners: Helen Robb & Karen Dekker
Doubles runners up: Rosie Cochrane & Val Houston
Mens - Sun 24th Aug 2025
Perfect playing conditions and a load of enthusiasm made for a brilliant day on the courts for the Mens Singles and Doubles. There was a big mix of talent from some clear favourites from veteran tennis locals and then some badminton players thrown in too!
The round robin singles format ended up with the predicted final: the Boyd brothers grudge match. It was an entertaining battle with Edward taking the lead with the trash-talk to match, but Williiam quietly worked his way through the match to take the win and the Singles title.
After a short break we were straight into the doubles with the teams drawn from the single’s seeding to make an even contest; anyone could win from there. But Edward got one back on his brother by taking the title with partner Mark, clearly the strongest team.
Singles winner: William Boyd
Singles runner up: Edward Boyd
Doubles winners: Edward Boyd & Mark Beeley
Doubles runners up: William Boyd & Kristian Whitaker
