About Our Club
The present Longden Tennis Club was founded by Trevor Hughes, a local farmer, who simply loved his tennis.
In the beginning, it was just a case of a few friends playing together on a court marked out on Trevor's front lawn. When he retired, he built his own floodlit court and then begged and borrowed the use of other local private courts as the Club grew.
Trevor's early death in 1980 led to the Club moving across the village to its present site, on land leased from the Douglas Swire Memorial Hall. In the spirit of its founder, Longden Tennis club has held on to the informality of its roots as much as possible, with the prime aim of members simply to enjoy playing tennis. Trevor Hughes continues to be fondly remembered by a number of present club members and a seat to his memory is situated alongside the tennis courts. There is a detailed booklet on the history of the club, should you wish a copy, please contact the Secretary.
The courts were refurbished in 2008 and repainted in 2017 and 2020. The clubhouse is available to all members and has a communal area with table and chairs and an adjoining changing areas. There are also facilities to make hot drinks and a separate WC on the side of the clubhouse.
Although the main tennis season runs from April to October each year, the floodlit courts are open all year round and many members take advantage of this, playing right through the winter. Club Nights run from April to October on Monday evening from 7pm - 10pm, a committee member will always be present to help organise play. The club for many years has entered Men's and Ladies teams in the Shrophire Summer Doubles Leagues, and mixed teams in the Autumn Doubles League.
Annually we also hold a Club Tournament, including men, ladies and mixed in both singles and doubles, please click here for more information.
