MENS
Last weekend Norfolk Men made the long journey to Exeter for group 4a of LTA Winter County Cup.
The team of N Crawley(C), K Jenkins(VC), J Henden, A McNaughton, J Philpott, A Watkinson, J Henery(debut), F Withers & T Fisher gathered at Exeter University Tennis Centre on Thursday afternoon for practice having travelled from various parts of the country.
First up on Friday was Nottinghamshire, after some singles battles which went the wrong way the team responded winning two of the three doubles in a 7-2 loss.
Saturday verses Berkshire was a similar story, with tight singles moments mainly not going the Norfolk boys way, again a response was shown and doubles success followed to mean a 5-3 loss.
Going into Sunday the team knew a win against Devon would mean safety in the group would be secured. Young James Henery provided an early boost coming from a set down to win in 3 sets which seemed to dampen Devon’s spirits, wins for Watkinson, Henden, Jenkins followed and it was when Withers won at no1 that the 5-1 result was finalised and the team maintained their group 4 status.
Captain Crawley praised the sides attitude throughout the weekend ‘Firstly the commitment to travel down and back in tricky weather conditions, then to see tight moments go against us but stick together and get the win we needed on Sunday was a credit to the boys. I could name examples of the players all doing things without hesitating which showed their desire to be part of the team, above all else that’s what pleased Kris and I most.’
Special congratulations must go to James Henery on making his debut and winning a vital long 3 setter and Alex Watkinson for his performance on and off court over the 3 days.
