Club History
1930s Tennis was first played behind County Hall on land that was shared with Northallerton Cricket Club. Nets and posts had to be erected each time.
1948 The land was purchased at Hambleton Avenue. We started with 3 grass courts – situated where there is now only grass behind the tennis pavilion.
1949 3 hard courts were laid by En Tout Cas. Subs were £1-10s-0 for Seniors and 10/6 for Juniors. Situated as now but with third court across the bottom of first and second court.
1962 A new pavilion was erected – opened by Mr Clapham, president of the Cricket Club. Subs £2-3-0 for Seniors and 15/- for Juniors.
1980 A fourth court was added.
2010 A new clubhouse was built. It remains in place today.
Records held do not indicate when the Club entered the Darlington and District Mixed and Men’s Leagues but it was prior to us entering a Ladies’ Team in 1978. The Ladies took the league title in 1981.
In 2004 we withdrew from the Mixed and Mens’ Divisions. We now still only enter a Ladies’ team in that League.
In 2000 the Club entered a mixed team in the Harrogate and District League for the first time. The number of teams grew over the years and for two seasons (2011 to 2012) we had as many as 4 teams. There are currently 2 teams.
Over the seasons we have participated in several other local leagues as follows:
VOM Men’s Sunday Morning league
Cleveland Winter League
Thirsk Winter League
Veterans’ League
Dales Ladies’ League, which we won in 1992 and 1994.
