Tournaments
Currently there are several internal tournaments held annually. The history of each is explained below.
ANN RENDER TROPHY
Ann was a very regular and keen tennis player at the club. Her life was tragically cut short at the age of 22. Her husband, Tony, who was also a regular player, donated a cup in her memory. The cup was first competed for in June 1969. It was fitting that two members who had played so, so many times with Ann and Tony were the first ever winners, namely Marje Bateson and Max Robinson.
FORMAT: American Mixed Tournament
BILL LOFTHOUSE MEMORIAL CUP
Bill joined the club as an adult and was well known for his great love of Club Nights. Bill died suddenly and unexpectedly at home, while others were waiting for him on court. His widow donated a cup in Bill’s memory. The cup was first played for in 1989 and again it was fitting that one of the winners that day was Nora Smith who had been waiting to play a friendly four with Bill and others on the day that he died.
FORMAT: American Mixed Tournament. Due to Bill’s love for regular club play, it was decided that only members who met the criterion of attending a certain number of club nights in that season would be allowed to enter the competition. However, due to dwindling numbers, that criterion was set aside in later years.
MARJE BATESON CUP
Marje Bateson was a massive part of the Tennis (and Cricket) Club for many years. She not only played regularly herself, in matches, club nights and tournaments, she was also very generous with her time as a volunteer, encouraging juniors through coaching sessions and tournaments. Marje served on the committee from the 1970s through to the mid-1990s. When she retired from tennis, she was keen to encourage inter club play and donated the cup which was first contested in 1996. As with the other cups, above, it was fitting that one of the winners in that first year was Margaret Fenwick who had benefitted as a junior from Marje’s encouragement and guidance over many seasons before she progressed to adult membership.
FORMAT: American Mixed Tournament.
KILDING CUP/TP SPORTS
This cup was first played for in 1978, when the local sports shop, Kildings, sponsored an annual tournament. At one point it became known as the TP Sports trophy, when TP Sports took over the sponsorship. Neither shop exists now and the sponsorships ended.
FORMAT: Mixed doubles. Players enter as a couple and stay together throughout. The winners cannot play together in the competition the following season.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHPS
Ladies' and Men's Singles: Records stretch back to 1964.
Ladies' Doubles, Men's Doubles and Veterans' Mixed Doubles were all introduced as annual competitions in 1991.
The Mixed Doubles annual competition was introduced a year later, in 1992.
Girls' and Boys' Singles: Unfortunately many of the records are no longer held due to minutes and cups going astray but the competitions both date back at least to the 1970s.
