Committee

Our current committee is made up of the following members:

CHAIRPERSON
Lynne Kirkham

I’ve been a member at Rotherham Moorgate L.T.C for a few years now. I joined in 1999, originally as a summer member to link in with playing squash during the winter. I’d never played tennis before and needed nudging into standing in the correct place!

All my playing was purely social at first; but then a group of ladies decided to enter the
South Yorkshire tennis league and I was asked to join in.

I remember my first game with new balls..... wow, such was my introduction to league tennis. I’m now the Ladies 'A' Team Captain and also a member of the committee: with special focus on helping John with any social tennis as well as implementing my new role of Welfare Officer for the club. I am the first point of contact in any safeguarding issues.

Finally, I was excited to be offered the position of Chair when Paul Burgess decided to step down; and started in this role in February 2016.

TREASURER
Paul Wilman

I joined Rotherham Moorgate L.T.C in June 2012 after retiring from a career in accountancy; and since then I’ve loved both playing and meeting lots of great people.

I was asked to join the committee soon after becoming a member and, in March 2013, I was elected to become Joint-Treasurer. I have now been Moorgate's full Treasurer since 2014, which means I am responsible for looking after the finances of the club; and advising where necessary on financial matters. In addition, at the moment I’m also on the sub-committee responsible for looking after any property matters; so if you spot any repairs that need seeing to - let me know!

I enjoy being involved in the discussions about the various matters relating to the running of the club, and I hope I’m able to contribute something to a very enthusiastic and active club.

As a retired Chartered Accountant, I guess I was a natural choice to succeed Brian as Treasurer; and I hope I’ll be able to make a meaningful contribution to the running of the club!

GENERAL CLUB SECRETARY
Rob Wood

I joined the club in 2004 following the demise of the Tennis section at Phoenix and, partly to help make sure I wasn't leaving one sinking ship for another, became Men's S&D Second Team Captain in 2006 and Secretary in 2007.

One of my favourite parts of the job is advising prospective new members on what the club has to offer. I've always been able to tell people what a friendly club this is and how players of both all abilities and none are welcome. Moreover, since 2012's resurfacing and floodlighting, I've not had to skirt around the state of the courts!

My least favourite part of the job is having occasionally to send nagging e-mails to all members in order to remind a small minority to leave the clubhouse and courts as they'd wish to find them.

MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY
Anne Walker

Anne is one of the key figures at the club and has undertaken the role of Membership Secretary admirably for over 20 years.

TEAM SECRETARY
John McGleave

I joined Rotherham Moorgate L.T.C during 2011 after being told to give up football due to arthritis; and having played tennis socially for many years, it seemed the obvious choice. I was invited to join the committee during that first year for reasons I still cannot fathom; and it was made official in the early part of 2012.

My current role on the committee evolved through trying to take some of the workload off of Rob Wood and I ended up with the title of Team Secretary; but with a further responsibility for social tennis.

I see my role as making sure that every single member of Moorgate LTC gets what they want out of the club and I enjoy every minute of it - apart from dealing with those people who never read their emails (you know who you are!!)

I will apologise right now for the picture that accompanies this; no one should have to gaze on that countenance!!
Enjoy your tennis!

GENERAL COMMITTEE MEMBER / PREVIOUS CHAIRPERSON
Paul Burgess

I’ve been a member of Rotherham Moorgate L.T.C for over 20 years; a Committee member for over 15 years; and Chairman for 12 years up until February 2016, before handing over the reigns to Lynne Kirkham.

I’ve played league tennis since the early 1970’s but, as a consequence of ageing bones and general physical deterioration, today I play only social tennis unless the competitive teams are extremely short. I particularly enjoy using a mixture of lob and drop shots with a view to generally annoying the opposition. On the other hand I’m always mystified as to why opposition players choose to stand so far forward to receive my serve.

I’m pleased to have been involved, together with other members of the committee, in the regeneration of the club’s facilities and was delighted that these achievements were recognised by Moorgate being voted both Sheffield and District Club of the Year and Yorkshire Club of the Year in 2012.

Finally, my other interests include playing golf and running.

WEBSITE MANAGER
Matthew Hopps

I originally joined Rotherham Moorgate L.T.C in 1997 as a 12 year old; but was only a member for one year before the club’s coaching schemes were reduced, owing to the retirement of the-then coaches. This was followed not too long afterwards by the old clubhouse fire which, coupled with studying for exams, meant that my opportunities at Moorgate were restricted. I kept playing elsewhere through the early-mid noughties and later rejoined the club in May 2009; taking up my role on the committee in Spring/Summer of 2012.

I joined the committee because I was interested in learning about the running of the club and wanted to be more involved in the decision-making processes. My key area of responsibility is managing the club’s website (having first rebuilt it in March 2014), plus participating in the committee meetings: accepting the items with which I agree, whilst putting across my point on items I don’t.

The most enjoyable part of my role is being able to make my contribution to the club's existence and its ongoing success; however some committee meetings have the potential to drag on for too long should there be an overly full agenda!

TOURNAMENT ORGANISER
Bilal Abbasi

I joined Rotherham Moorgate L.T.C in June 2009, and then became a committee member in 2012. I am responsible for overseeing the Public Relations of the club, which is a role I have held since January 2014. Initially, this was a shared position, but I have sole responsibility for this. I initially enjoyed learning how the committee works and am now able to play a positive role in its work.

A few details that not all of you know about me: I used to play chess and participated in a national tournament when I was a child. I also played cricket while I was in secondary school and was also a member of Sheffield United Cricket Club for a while.
Thanks for reading.

U12 TEAM & PARENT SUPPORT
Mark Busby

I joined Rotherham Moorgate L.T.C as a Playing Parent in 2011 to support my daughters. Then in February 2014, I decided to become a member of the committee because I wanted to get involved with helping the younger members of the club and support another junior tennis team.

My key area of responsibility is to manage the U12 Tennis Team and I’m looking forward to seeing the U12 juniors enjoying competitive tennis.

The funny thing is, that by getting my daughters involved in tennis, it has given me the impetus to pick up my own tennis racket again! So in April 2014, I upgraded my membership from Playing Parent to a Full Member; so now I can play more often myself!
