Juniors Serve Up a Debut Win

After being unable to field a junior side in recent years, Moorgate have managed to enter a team in the Sheffield and District Under 14 Winter League and they opened their account for the season on Sunday, with a home game against local rivals Mexborough.

Awema Njalale, Matei Mare and Max Venables all made their senior debuts earlier this year, but Freya Wilby was making her debut at any level and only Max had played junior tennis for the club before.

Awema/Freya and Max/Matei both made good starts in their opening matches, before a mid game lull was followed by a return to winning form, with the girls winning 10-3 and the boys winning 10-4.

The Mixed Doubles followed a similar pattern, with Awema/Matei and Freya/Max both recording 10-3 wins to give their team an overall victory margin of 4-0.

In the Sheffield and District Winter League, on Saturday, Moorgate B entertained Welbeck B, in a Division 4 clash looking to build on the two good wins from their previous matches and were never in trouble on their way to a 4-0 win.

Dave Mangham and Todd Sweeney won in straight sets, without losing a game, whilst Ada Wood and Jan Gaynor only dropped two games on their way to an easy victory.

Dave/Ada and Todd/Jan then comfortably won their Mixed Doubles matches for a combined loss of just five games.

In Division 1, Moorgate A travelled to face Welbeck A looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season and secure second place in the league after four matches.

Josh Bows and Adam Butcher made short work of their opposition with a comfortable straight sets win, soon to be followed by a similar performance from Maddie Busby and Debbie Johnson.

Josh and Maddie then had a straight sets win, in the Mixed Doubles, before a back injury to Debbie contributed to a defeat for herself and Adam, giving Moorgate a 3-1 win.

There are still good offers on membership for new members at Moorgate, with floodlights allowing all year round play and details can be found on the club's website.
