HEALTH & SAFETY AT RUDGWICK TENNIS CLUB
General
Notices have been affixed to the notice board and courts asking that all club members wear appropriate clothing and footwear on the courts and that they check that the court is suitable for play.
Members should note there is no public telephone on the club’s premises. They should therefore ensure that they have a means of contacting the emergency services should the need arise eg mobile phone.
Both of our coaches, Amy and Kath, hold up-to-date First Aid certificates.
It is the individual responsibility of each member to inform those you are playing with of any known medical condition you have that may require immediate assistance.
Minor accidents
There are two First Aid Kits – clearly labelled green boxes - for use in the event of any minor injuries. One is stored on top of the fridge/freezer in the clubhouse and another is stored on the shelves opposite the door in the ball hut near entry to Court 1. While the kit is limited in scope it should adequately cope with the more usual minor injuries likely to arise (ice packs, bandages, plasters, tape etc). If you finish any item that needs replacing, please inform a committee member as soon as possible.
Please report any accidents at the club correctly and promptly. All injuries should be reported via an online Accident Report Form, downloadable here and passed to the Chair. It is usual for the casualty themselves to make the report and submit it, however, in the event of a serious accident, when this may not be possible, the Senior Member taking charge of the situation should ensure that the Accident Report Form is completed.
Serious accidents or incidents
In the event of a serious accident or incident, the Emergency Services must be called. The senior Member present (Chair, other Committee Members, Senior Member or Junior Member) should immediately take responsibility for coordinating action and reporting the matter, both on an Accident Report Form and directly to a Committee Member. It is a legal requirement that any major accident (one resulting in hospitalization in excess of 24 hours), regardless of perceived liability, is reported to the HSE. It is also an insurance requirement that certain matters be reported to the insurance brokers. It is, therefore, imperative that the Chair is also alerted promptly so the matter can be correctly followed through.
Accident and Emergency Guidelines
- Stay calm but act swiftly and observe the situation. Is there any danger of further injuries?
- Listen to what the injured person is saying
- If the injury is minor, alert a first aider, (if there is one present) to take appropriate action and/or use the First Aid kits, if required
- If the injury requires specialist treatment, call the emergency services
- If the injury has occurred during a junior group session, ensure the rest of the group are adequately supervised
- Do not move someone with major injuries – wait for the emergency services
- Contact the injured person’s parent/carer/close friend (as appropriate)
- Download an Accident/Incident Report Form, complete and send to the Chair

The nearest one is located in the exterior porch at the entrance to Rudgwick Hall with 24hr access.

Junior Members
Junior Members using the club’s facilities do so subject to appropriate parental permission. Parents have a duty to inform those supervising children during organised activities of any relevant health information in relation to their child. Parents also have a responsibility to ensure that their child behaves in an appropriate way and does not do anything which may endanger themselves or other users.
Fire
If you discover a fire, there is a fire extinguisher in the clubhouse on top of the fridge/freezer and a fire blanket on the wall above the kettle. Alert others and clear the clubhouse, assembling outside No. 1 court.
Call the fire brigade – our location is King George VI Playing Fields, Bucks Green, Rudgwick, West Sussex, RH12 3JJ(what3words > “stalemate.view.strays”).
Anything unsafe at the club or in the clubhouse?
Please bring to the attention of a Committee Member as soon as possible.
Odd jobs
When volunteering to do something for the club, please note that it is your responsibility to stay safe - only do something you are comfortable with and competent to do. Use appropriate PPE, barriers etc and get help if that makes the job safer (i.e. holding ladder).
Risk Assessment
An annual risk assessment is undertaken to ensure that the premises and equipment are safe and suitable for play. At all times, members should appraise the risk and satisfy themselves that the courts are safe and wear appropriate tennis footwear with adequate grip.
