A spectacular Club Championships finals day at SLTC
Congratulations to all our players who made it through to the finals. What a lovely day we had in the Autumn sunshine!
A lot of sublime tennis was played with many memorable moments - Steve Hancock going 3-0 down in the first set against a determined Jack Payton; Grace Turney taking the ladies singles title at twelve years old after a battle with Hattie Leslie-Miller, and then winning the ladies doubles with her mum, Rose after a long tie break third set against the redoubtable Jane Williams and Susie Williams; and Steve Hancock bouncing back to win not only the coveted mens singles title but also the mixed doubles with Cheryl Evans, having also been runnerup in the mens doubles with Louis Johnson.
What a player! Three finals matches in 5 hours is some going. And just back from his honeymoon...
Our photo shows our club Chair, Jeremy Johnston handing the cup to our ladies singles champion, Grace Turney. What an achievement.
And Grace did quite well too.
We won't dwell on club coaches Harrison Gwilt and Mike Barton. The two of them winning the mens doubles was not the biggest surprise of the year, but they were a joy to watch, as always.
Our top picture shows some of the faces competing in our junior club championships which took place on the same day. More than thirty youngsters battled it out across four categories.
All in all a fantastic day for the club and congratulations to everyone who entered the competition.
