St Ives A v Falmouth A

Battle of the Giants – Men’s A v Falmouth A
This was likely to be the match to decide the season; both teams were unbeaten before this meeting but Falmouth were top of the league. It was not a good omen at 12.55 when there was still no sign of James but he responded to Jim’s call and said he was running a bit late. Colin and Matt began against the number two pair and went 2-1 down before Jim and a sickly James had even started.
Channelling the spirit of Corporal Jones, the St. Ives players didn’t panic as our second pair won 6-2, 6-1 and our number ones triumphed 6-2, 6-4. James left the court to be sick and Colin made the fashion defying statement of tucking his sunburnt ears under his baseball cap.
The third rubber quickly went to Jim and James 6-2, 6-1 while Colin and Matt had a tougher encounter with the number ones. Falmouth took the first set 6-4 and the second went to a tie-break which St. Ives won 7-5.
By now, quite a crowd had amassed to be thrilled by the tennis and entertained by James’ commentary which included such gems as ‘I hate tie-breaks…I really hate championship tie-breaks…actually, I hate tennis…’
If anyone hated tie-breaks it should be Falmouth as St. Ives won the decider 10-4 giving us the result of 10-1 overall.
